Well, instead of the lovely dinner I was planning on having in the city this evening...I think we'll have to come up with a new plan.   The fireplace will soon be crackling and a bottle of champagne is chilling for starts!  I hope you all have a safe, cozy and warm night as well!

For real!  It's been snowing like December here all day!  Hubby and I aren't even  leaving the house.  We dug out our robes, slippers and the electric blanket instead!

I'm loving it!  I'm a total winter gal.  This is like a gift!  I'm sorry about your missed trip, but hopefully you can have a romantic evening inside.

My husband is working and I'm crossing my fingers hoping he gets home safely.  I HATE when he's not home in storms.  I'm getting ready to fire up the woodstove, but it's not the same if he's not here!

My dogs are not impressed with the weather.  I have to get them coats and booties.  Poor things.  They're just shaking when they go out!

Where are you guys??

Sanchica, am I right in thinking you're in the Tri-State area somewhere? I can't believe it's snowing there already. Crazy! I was in NYC this time last year and it wasn't exactly hot, but not even close to snow-cold!

Happy Anniversary though I don't envy you having all that snow.

I'll try to send some sunshine your way.  I wish I could give you warmer temps too but hopefully the sunshine will at least do.  Enjoy your evening at home Smiley

My Dad just called from Northern New Jersey to say the wet-snow-on-leaves up there is devastating the area. Already, branches and trees are down everywhere, all he could hear outside was the cracking of trees – young and old – power is out, and the coming heavy winds haven't even begun yet. Now, WHAT my 80-plus year-old dad was doing outside in this storm is another matter *SIGH* especially when he told me that a big branch came down just where he'd been standing minutes before ...

Stay safe everyone, and most importantly keep yourselves and your loved-ones INSIDE.

Speaking of staying in... Happy Anniversary Lovecolor. May you and your sweetie enjoy a long, memorable, ROMANTIC eve sharing some special bubbly by a toasty fire!  icon_sunny

a tree just fell on my CAR!  HOLY COW!  Luckily it just missed my kids who were all out frolicking in the first snow of the year.  That was scary!  Luckily no one is hurt and the car is covered under homeowners insurance.  But yikes.

It's one of 4 down in my neighborhood right now.  I just helped push my neighbor's car out of my driveway and across the street.  He couldn't even drive across the street the roads are so bad.

My husband just called from work.  They lost power so he's on his way home.  I'm hoping for an uneventful and safe return.

I'm in CT.  This is nuts.    Everyone stay safe!

Oh  my...I'm sorry about your car...but thank goodness no one was in the car at the time...a.d I'm so glad your kids were not hurt either!  I hope your husband gets home safely and without much trouble.  Driving here has been an ordeal for many ...we have loads of hills.   Four wheel drive  is mandatory on a day like this...but not everyone has one.  Good luck and stay safe.

Wow!!  Stay safe.  We are used to snow (though usually it starts in Nov at the earliest) but we only get trees down due to ice. That's some crazy snow you have there!!!

I wish I could send you all some peanut butter cookies I am making right now.  They are my son's favorite cookie and I am quite fond of PB myself.

I really hope everyone does okay with the rest of this storm.  I didn't realize it was going to be this crazy for everyone there.  I'll be thinking of you all!

You got it Mrs.M I'm right on Long Island.  Hubby and I never left the house all day.  We stayed in and simply cooked and lounged with the kitties all day, perfect Saturday for me!

So glad I moved from CT to Buffalo  Grin No snow here yet!

Although this does remind me of "Arborgeddon" or "Lake Storm Aphid." It happened Oct 13 2006. Buffalo lost 75% of it's trees to the storm. It was like a hurricane ripped through here.

Hope everyone in its path stays safe and warm. This is what an early snow can do to a city

Holy crap!

I have a lot of trees round my house, this is making me nervous! The long range forecast for where I live is snow, snow, snow all winter.

Hope everyone is warm, snug and above all, SAFE.

Gosh the weather is funny this year.  We still don't have snow here.  Normally there has been at least 1 dump in Sept/early Oct and it can be darn cold for the kiddies at Halloween.  I am crossing my fingers it stays for a while yet.

I have to tell you all that DF and I left for Charlotte, NC (and Myrtle beach, SC) at 11:30 PM on Friday night.  From the bottom of NJ to half way across NC it RAINED, and HARD.  I guess we got out of Dodge just in time.  DF's son sent me a picture around 2PM showing us what it looked like up here.  It was partly sunny and 55 in Charlotte.

You were lucky DAF...We spent our anniversary in the dark, surrounded by candles...but with our DS.   Undecided  (because we had over 8 inches of snow, we had to cancel our evening out.)   There were trees blocking so many roads.  We fortunately only had a 4 day black out this time...with a brand new generator sitting at the side of our house just waiting to be installed.  Hopefully, it will be in before the next Nor'easter!   Roll Eyes

yeah, it was brutal here.  The storm was last saturday and a large majority of my county is still without power.  it's really bad.  I'm so tickled to have mine back, but spent the afternoon cooking for those that don't.  There are many that still need assistance.  Schools have been closed for the last week too, and they're closed again tomorrow....I'm going stir crazy!

In Bergen County, NJ, they are saying this is the worst storm in more than 100 years. Now THAT'S bad! So sorry to hear about everyone's troubles.

Just curious, why do you guys loose power when it snows? Is it a generation capacity problem, or a problem with power lines?

I ask because however bad it gets here, we usually still have gas and electricity, but now I'm getting nervous, as a hard winter is forecast and maybe a third one in a row will be the final straw for our infrastructure. No one here has back up generators and maybe we should be thinking about it. If it's a capacity issue, we'll be ok - we're only a mile or so from the power station (tell me that's how it works....) but if it's anything else, I'm worried...

Mrs.M, the power problem is due to fallen and damaged utility poles and lines, mostly due to high wind and too much snow on trees and branches (causing trees and branches to crash down, often into homes, cars, power lines and roads). This storm was particularly destructive to certain areas because the leaves were still on the trees. Several inches of snow on leaved-trees made for too much weight, and down came the trees. Because the ground was already saturated, many trees just uprooted themselves and feel over... even 200 year-old oaks. There seemed no logic to it; many, many "strong" trees, both young and old, just split in half. Farther up North, the storm was not a problem because the leaves were already off the trees for the season.

Of course, once the power lines are severely damaged, often much of the still-existing power must be shut down for safety reasons until repairs are made.

FWIW, I just heard on the news that in Connecticut there are still "tens of thousands" of people without power.
