Now that you mention it Mrs M... It is kind of odd that they put the dress code on the invitation isn't it? Maybe it was because of the Middleton's being commoners or possibly just the way it is done?

Why do you regret not telling your SIL she could wear jeans? what kind of wedding did you have?

People asked me what to wear to mine, and I told them to be comfortable, but not to casual. Most came in sport jackets and and a few coat and tie. As for the women, my SIL wore a long dress and most of the women cocktail dresses. Funny how we gals like to dress up while men seem to prefer dressing down.

I think it's important to have your guests be comfortable though and some brides don't seem to take it into consideration. My nephew married in south florida, on the beach, in august, at 3:00 in the afternoon. The bride insisted on suit and tie for the men. My husband complained loud and long all day. It was 93 degrees and humid as could be. Even I suffered in a chiffon dress.

Yes, as far as I know. Invitations are engraved, then written by a calligrapher. Mine were done with a quill and ink.

I bought mine off the shelf at WH Smith and wrote them with a biro.   Grin

Ballpoint pen. Actually, it should be BiroTM - the original was invented by Hungarian aristocrat Count Laszlo Biro, and he won a court judgement against the generic use of the name, so watch out!

We`re almost due to send out our invitations and mine are similarly plain and I`ll hand write the guest`s name in fountain pen. Only because I`d be rubbish with a quill.  I can  thankfully use waterproof ink in the pen. Our weather is notoriously wet and I once received a 60th birthday invitation written in fountain pen and it had become drenched either in the mailbox or whilst the postman was carrying it, the ink had smudged so badly it was almost illegible.
I daresay Wills and Kate`s invitations would have been delivered by courier just so none of them fall into unwanted hands and also to keep them safe from the elements.

It's British.  Wink  These are absolutely 'correct' wedding invitations. It's a standard form of font, wording and layout, not to be deviated from.  Unique or extravagant would be considered very poor form.  Roll Eyes It will be slightly three dimensional in real life, as the text will be engraved. The invitee's name will be hand written with a pen and ink.
Do they still use a quill and ink well?  Grin

Raven or eagle quill for an invite to a gentleman, and goose or swan quill for an invite to a lady is considered the utmost of formal correctness.

Funny man!  Grin
If you don't really want the invitee to attend, you use a peacock feather...

My SIL asking if she should wear jeans was intended to be a slight - it's not going to be anything fancy, right? Bound to be a bit down market, since it's the second time around (it wasn't for me, but DH was married before).

It was a very formal wedding, she'd have stood out like a sore thumb in jeans, which would have served her right for being catty! I took some moral high ground though. Grin

You are just too darned nice, Miz M!  I might have suggested something more formal would be good, but doubt I'd make a point of it.  Evil
