I thought this would be one of the best places I could ask this question:

What sort of safe do you use and/or recommend for storing your jewelry in your home?

I tend to favor the idea of a wall safe behind a picture but my husband believes that would be too easy for a thief to pull out of the wall. However, I think a safe in the closet may be too much temptation for a would-be burglar in that they could break in while we were away then come back to force us to open it when we were home again.

A friend of ours was a victim of a home invasion recently and they were after the safe. They didn't even pick up the $600 cash sitting on the counter in the kitchen because they were so focused on getting the safe. Therefore, I'm just not too secure in the idea of a safe that will sit inside our closet. What do you think?

Sadly, I think that if someone is determined to have it, they will. Sure, you get some opportunistic burglars and thieves, but many of them are professionals -very good at their jobs. When we try to second guess them, we don't have their expertise.

I suppose  a basic safe build into brickwork or attached to a structure within a metal frame with sheared bolts would deter the casual burglar, but a proper professional will know how to get round that, I'd imagine.

Wear sentimental pieces that you couldn't bear to lose. Insure the rest. Having the most elaborate security system in the world will attract the more skilled class of burglar,  I suspect.

I agree with Jen. Unless having a safe is a condition of your insurance, I'd focus on finding a really good hiding place for the jewellery.

...and don't post about it here. Seriously, I once saw a thread on a different forum about where to hide small high value items. Like a sort of burglary tutorial.

oh dear.

My grandmother has a very nice collection and no safe.  But I'd wager that even the most experienced burglar would have a really tough time trying to loot her.  She never puts more than two pieces together and they are in RANDOM places.  The only issue will be us trying to recover them when it comes down to it!

A friend mentioned that he had his poured into the foundation when the house was built- no way that is going anywhere.  The only place I would put one is if it is hammer drilled into concrete, well hidden and hard to get to.  And then have a second one somewhere more obvious as the decoy. And tell no one.
