That's what I screamed this afternoon when my son "accidentally" spilled his milk and some of it landed on my laptop.  He didn't mean to get it on me and my computer but he did intentionally drop it - a power struggle for us at the moment with real cups vs toddler cups.

I am currently on my old one that works but dang, I dislike.  I forgot why I replaced it until I turned it on today to do some work and stuff.  Ugh, it sucks.

It at least works.

The other?  I shut it down immediately and there were no signs of shorting out before I did.  My husband took his lunch to come home with tools to tear the machine apart and look for visible damage.  Fortunately there wasn't much sign of anything.

Hopefully the water resistant keyboard did its thing and the rest will dry out fine.  Not sure when we will turn it on to test it.  Until then I'm back to old non-HD laptop that makes those gems look drab compared to before.  *sigh*

If I had been drinking milk, I would have spit it all over the laptop after reading that Grin

I read a bunch of bad stories online and almost none came back from having a spill.  I guess pulling the power immediately and dismantling the laptop so it can dry with fans really helps.  Some sticky keys that have gunk under them but so far *knock on wood* all are working and nothing is wonky.

Admittedly I am happy I don't have to try replacing any parts on this laptop or having to buy a new one Smiley

Don't do that. Too much milk is NOT good for you.

A cracked mother(board) is indisputably BAD. Please don't.

I used to have an office next door to the IT department in a large hospital. They kept a bucket of dried white rice for moments like this - it sucks the moisture out of even quite delicate technology after people have thrown coffee, water and so on at it. Worth a last chance try!

OMC you are just full of silly yet funny puns... and it would be especially bad for the child of mine if I cracked it over his head Wink

Fortunately those are a lot harder to take out of laptops than a desktop machine - which is the type I am best repairing.  So hopefully this mother(board) will stay in one piece.

Jen the white rice is fabulous for things like cell phones and other small devices like that when they get soaked.  For a computer using a fan is a great idea if you can dismantle it like we did.  If you can't then a few days in white rice is a brilliant idea!

Just don't use a hair dryer... people have been known to melt keys and other plastic components using them Roll Eyes

I saw someone try to dry her cellphone on the hand dryer in the toilets at an airport once. Yup, she'd dropped it down the toilet... Grin

Sorry about your laptop though. This will be the new one you were so excited to get, right?

Dropping phones in toilets is exactly why I have protection plans for them.  That and having a 3 year old Wink

Yes this was the newer laptop I just got last year.  I don't even use it as much since I got the tablet.  Of course it couldn't have been that one which would've only been a $150 part to replace.  I am very lucky to have shut it down so quickly and to have the knowledge as well as a smart husband to help me.  I was so afraid this one was toast.  To the point where I had picked out a new laptop and was ready to order LOL.

I also have a kid who isn't such a snot about drinking from a real cup Grin

« Reply #13 on: August 17, 2011, 04:07:15 PM »

Yeah...well spilled milk is one thing....with three kids (young adults still under my roof....arrggghhhh)and each with cell phones...I can fill an entire 8 x11 sheet of paper of things my kids have dropped or spilled on their phones.

When my college age son told me someone pee'd on his phone...I nearly lost it. Try to figure that one out.

Ranks right up there with asking why there are unopened beers of a variety never bought by me in my 15 yr old's motocross boots.  Why ask why?  It won't get you a good answer.

You mean like this?

It's a quaint German custom, that's all. Though in motocross boots it must acquire an interesting flavour. I suggest you insist that he drinks the lot from the boot.

If he stilled lived with us, I'd certainly consider it, OMC.  Seems only fair.

And leave the beers at room temperature, just as they were found, right OMC? I 'm sure I can find a way to drop a bit of the exterior mud into the interior. hehehehe Evil

I think the natural flavouring of the interior would be enough even without mud.

Given my absolute dislike of beer I would think the boot might actually make it taste better to me Grin
