I just read this article - tomorrow, New Yorkers should be able to see the sun line up perfectly with the buildings in a phenomenon called Manhattanhenge (think Stone Henge). This is so, so cool and I'd love to see photos if anyone gets the chance to snap some!

Shoot- I forgot to check this out today.
Actually, it's not only on those specific days that the effect can be observed- for at two weeks on each side, the effect is visible.
Even if it's only perfect tomorrow- I've observed it many times.
Completed in 1902 it was one of the tallest buildings in the city. I believe that the development of the elevator was part of what made these taller buildings possible.

Related to some degree- a pic of one of my favorite buildings- The Flatiron Building

Now we're really straining the test for relevance- I took this picture near the Flatiron Building. At the Union Square Farmers market
I just liked it, so I wanted an excuse to post it.

Nice radishes!  On my laptop, the color goes from vivid red top left to center and fades to pinkish at the bottom.  Very nice!

The Flatiron building is my all time favourite, and I could spend hours looking at it. I'm amazed at how old it is - it still looks contemporary in many ways.  DH's favourite is the Seagram Building, which apparently is on the list of things all architects should see before they die (or something).

Love the radishes, glad you got to post them.  Smiley

Mies van der Rohe was a genius. The Seagram Building looks like it was built 10 years ago - because it isn't obviously new - but it was built in the late 1950s. And I suspect  - hope - it will be there for a long long time to come, because of the quality of the architecture and of the materials (the window frames are in bronze...).

That is a gorgeous building.  I admit I didn't spend much time just looking at architecture there when I was there last.  I need to make a point of it when I go next time.

This sounds like a really neat thing to be able to see though.

I listened to a lot of this when DH came to NY with me... Roll Eyes  It surely is a beautiful building, but he was in raptures over it. We looked at it for ten days in a row. In the rain, mostly. This would be why I went without him last time.  Wink

Hate to adimit it, but shopping with my husband is like going on a deer hunt with the game warden.  I like the company, but I never bag anything when he's around.   Grin  I could wish he were more into architecture!

Nope, you don't want him fixating on the buildings either. The Seagram Building is tantalizingly close to some fantastic shops, but you can't get at 'em while you're photographing detail of a bronze window frame in the lashing rain and howling gale. It's not so much hunting with the game warden as hunting the the pacifist vegetarian who uses handy ruses to distract you from the kill.
