This may be a stupid question........but, hey I want to know! What is a Doola?

Br...no not a stupid question at all! I've only just recently learned about them from a friend who just had a baby a little over a year ago. A doula is kinda like a mid-wife, though they aren't licensed to actually deliver babies. They're certified through DONA. She's like a "birthing coach" and she assists you throughout your entire labor and delivery. So, she will be the first person I call when I go into labor, she'll come over to the house and help me count my contractions and help me to know when I need to go to the hospital. She will be by my side the entire time and help me relay to the Doctors and nurses what I want and don't want during the labor/delivery and also be there to help me with breathing, etc. At the end, she writes a narrative of the birth (which is good b/c I've heard I won't remember much of it at all) Smiley

Doula is a greek word. And it has to do with service for the whole process. Typically, they are better prepared than the husbands.

Ya' know........if you would of had us first we could of told you about using the diamond as a Doula!!!!LOL! How looking at the diamond, itself, will want you to push hard, so you can hurry up and put it on! hehehehe All kidding aside, it's nice to know that your going to have a professional right at your side from start to finish. When is the due date?

WM..Dh got a little offended when I said I wanted to hire one, but he realized it was a good idea when I started telling him all the things I had been reading about and he realized just how clueless he was. I'm really happy with our Doula. She was the nurse for the doctor of a small town nearby for 15 years and has been present at so many births she can't even count them anymore!

BR...I'm such a wimp, I need both the Doula AND the Diamond!!

First.....let me say CONGRATS on the BABY and the 1.92!!!!

I was in labor for 50 hours.......yup,  5-0.......I tried everything I could to keep from having an epidural,  b/c I wanted to go au natural.......Oh my!   By the 48th hour,  I gave in......my son was born 2 hours later......(My lesson.....the epidural calmed me,  my muscles were so tense,  from such long labor,  I would have needed the c-section regardless at that point.)

If you have long fingers.....I assume you are tall......I am 5'2" short.......most chics that I know who are tall and athletic,  popped their babies out in a under an hour!  SO,  no worries!!!  All will be just fine!   As for the Doula!  Right on!  I had a mid-wife,  who was with me THE ENTIRE 50 hours!  (Like any doctor would ever do that!  YEAH RIGHT!)  She was awesome!  Kept me laughing the whole way thru!  I tried the Hypno Birthing Method (similar to Bradley)  but,  when you're in labor that long.....it's IMPOSSIBLE not to talk.....or,  at least,  it is for me........hahaha!!!

Opting for a c-section seems to be a new trend.  A friend of mine did that 3 days ago.  I saw her daughter today....she was SO little and cute!  And the section scar.....SO SMALL,  it was already reattached and healing......totally unoticably placed about an inch down from the top of the pubic hair.......

Well,  I wish you,  your man,  and your bundle of love all the luck in the world!!!

Maybe we should make a *You have to show us all new baby pics in the chit chat section rule for the forum?!?*  (dogs,  cats,  and birds included!)  Just an idea!  Oh my!

Sorry for the ramble.....just passing the hours until the ring arrives!!!!!!!!!  Oh my!

Jewellk

First...I am so excited that you sealed the deal!!!  That is going to be one amazing halo!!!

And secondly...I have not one horror story to tell you about giving birth.  I spent most of the time that I was in labour helping my father hang gutters, shopping at WalMart, and having dinner with my grandmother.  When I finally did consent to go to the hospital she was born about 1.5 hours later.  The episiotomy was the least of my worries at the time.  Afterwards it was a bit of a pain, but more so because of the inconvenience than real pain.  The ease that I had with that birth was a major factor in my decision not to try it again  laugh

I think that you will find that you have strength that you didn't know that you had.  And, the mind does this really great trick of numbing the memory of the pain almost as soon as it is over!

I didn't really have labor with Maria, she was a 3 week early, sideways breech. The only clues I had was a slow water leak and a cat acting nutty. So we drove to the hospital, where all of 19 year old me got into a fight with the non-English speaking doctor. Me "I want Ph test, if paper black, I have baby now" Dr. "You no have water leak, you no have labor, you not due yet, you no have baby now, go home" "Ph test" "Go home!" "Ph test then I go home"
Dr did the test, eyes went wide "You no have water left, you have baby RIGHT NOW"
I shouted "Bikini cut!" (Doctors around here loved to do the older cut on young moms as a sort of punishment I think, every other mom I met that was under 21 has the old cut ) DR said "For you, no problem!"

So, no labor pains here. Watch that Mexican food the last month of pregnancy, she turned after I ate some hot stuff, and I could feel her head on my right side.

Everyone has such amazing pregnancy and delivery stories!    EMJ...I can't imagine having the bikini cut.   They did away with that years ago due to infections??    LOL...don't have mexican food the last month of pregnancy!    OOh that sounded uncomfortable!   Both of my pregnancies were so opposite from each other.    I gained 12lbs the first 8 weeks of my first pregnancy(I couldn't figure out why I was so damn hungry)   my second pregnancy........I actually lost weight!   It was the wierdest thing...but my skin, hair, and nails never looked so good!   ~Ronda

Interesting.  I had the bikini cut, and I ended up with a raging infection that put me back in the hospital for 2 weeks.  Almost died!  I had no idea there was a correlation between that kind of cut and infection.  I am going to research that. . .

Jewellk, I think having a Doula sounds like a great idea! It will be wonderul to have somebody that's experienced with the process around you at all times. DR's are great, but they're not there at all times to assist and answer all your questions. I'm sure she will help you during the whole process, both physically & emotionally. That's awesome she gives you a written narrative too. That'll make a wonderful scrapbook!

I had never heard of them until you mentioned it.

Do you know if they offer them at most hospitals, and if they are covered by most insurances?

I'm sure your beautiful Radiant will keep you motivated too!!!!

Here's wishing you an easy, fast delivery.

Congrats on the purchase and good luck with the delivery!!! Grin  I am sure you will be glad that you have a Doula-to help guide you with your wishes for the delivery.  I bet your hubby will ultimately be glad that he also had someone there to take the 'pressure' off of him-so he can just be there for you!

Foxy-Doula's are usually independent(but not always) and therefore are paid with cash, I haven't run into any insurances as of yet that cover their services(but that doesn't mean that there aren't some out there).  Most Doula's also base their fees on the amount of experience they have and some on the ability to pay by their clients.  The Doula's 'in training' may even provide services free of charge, due to the fact that they need to attend a certain number of births to become certified with DONA(which is a great resource to find Doula's in your area, Doula's of North America)

My grandmother was right about labor -- she liked to say that, "It's the worst pain you'll ever feel, and the soonest forgot."

I had three babies -- lots of labor.  One Nurse from Hell. One nurse who was a friend (didn't know she would be on duty that night).  One OB who couldn't be bothered to come in for the delivery (a bit like DJs story -- nurse didn't believe me when I told her it was time to push... And she didn't want "to bother Doctor."  --  She said it like that, as if "Doctor" was his name.  Weird.)  One OB who lived about five houses down from us, whose kids played with mine.

None of it really mattered...  Not that part... It's the next 18 years that you start to really feel!

But my oldest is 21 now, and about to graduate from the Ivy League.  Next one off to college this fall.  (hmmmm... in NYC... so near to Rock Diamonds...  hmmmm....)

Query:  Why am I looking at lovely DBL jewelry when I have two college tuitions to pay Huh??

Good luck -- You'll be fine -- Make friends with the anesthesiologist right away!

That is another great story Piglette.  I hear you about the next 18+++ years later.   Hey, there is no law out there that says WE have to pay for our kids tuition.   If we are blessed to do what we can.....Wonderful!  I say you deserve that sparkly for giving your kids the guidance they need along the way and to help fulfill there dreams!  They sound like two intelligent and upstanding citizens!  You must be Proud! ~Ronda

You are very kind !

My kids are, most of the time, great... Have a third one in 7th grade, so that college tuition will be put off for a while.  (God willing, she will make it into college... Isn't as focused on her studies as the first two were!)

Ahhh... college tuition payments.... There's a whole 'nother topic!  Many sizes for many kids and families... I could get us soooo far off topic here!

But back to congratulations to jewellk on the baby and the ring.  (In that order!)  Can't wait to see pics!  (of baby and ring... in that order!)
