... and no, we aren't talking Verdi here. We are talking gialli. Fancy Intense Gialli, to be precise.

Anyone remember when we lost an earring in a car park on a Sunday, and we managed to retrieve it on the Monday, minus the post and plus a handful of mud?

Well, today the other earring of the pair went AWOL - in the house. We are sure it's in the house, because DW put it on in the morning, by mid-day she had lost it, but she had not left the house. However, we cannot find it. We have moved pretty much every piece of furniture, shaken rugs, blankets, clothes and bedlinen. Swept floors, looked into bins, rummaged into the vacuum cleaner's bag, even asked the children. Nothing. Vanished. Except that of course it isn't. It's just hiding somewhere.

If worse comes to worst, we can turn the remaining earring into a little pendant, and buy a consolation pair of earrings sometimes in 2026 or thereabouts (if the economy continues on its present trajectory). And drink a Stella Artois in consolation - the music of the ad being most appropriate.

However, before I give up, any ideas?

Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear this.

Maybe wait a day or two, then look again? I remember the sick panic feeling I had when I lost my ring a few months ago though, and I know that will be hard.

A tip that someone suggested to me might help? Put a stocking over the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner and poke it into all the corners / behind sofa cushions etc.

I really do hope it's going to turn up.

Yes, a fresh vacuum bag with a stocking over the nozzle, and check the closet and area where she may have changed clothes, also the laundry.  Anything going over the head is suspect.  Make sure to shake the entire basket well before washing.

I am so sorry to hear of the continued escapades of this lovely set.  They seem to have quite a mischievous streak.

Sorry about this OMC.

Did she cook or bake this morning? Maybe its in the food....

Have you looked down the sink? I mean in the pipe under the sink?
Did she arrange some flowers - maybe its in the vase?

Maybe it fell off when she combed her hair and it get stuck on her cloth and fell off later. Maybe into her purse?

What about among the children's toys?

Do you have a pic. of the earrings?

Holy cow!
These earrings have a mind of their own!

Stocking over vacuum, and forgetting about it for a night sound like good ideas tome...

So sorry OMC- I hate looking for dropped diamonds.
Something I've spent oh so many hours doing.....

Do you have any pets?  My cats think jewelry makes wonderful toys.  Other than that, I second the ideas for laundry basket, sink, and bedclothes.  I've also lost a ring in a box while packing and an earring between the couch cushions.  I hope you find it!

I'm so sorry to hear this... AGAIN! Arghh. Who knew that a couple of earrings could have such willful and wanton minds of their own? I'm afraid that I have no advice to add, OMC. I've still never found the little red silk pouch containing my first wedding band and an aquamarine and baguette necklace (made from stones that were my mother's) that I THINK one of the cats hijacked. The good news is that I once recovered a little heart necklace that my mother had given me as a child, DECADES after loosing it.

Hopefully, the wayward earring will be located in the morning after a fresh look. I'm sending GOOD FINDING VIBES.  vibes

OK. Vacuum - prepare for stocking over your nose.

The pet is innocent (I think) - it's a 10 year old Belgian Shepherd who is singularly uninterested in jewelry - or indeed in anything that isn't soft and squeaky or edible.

Yes, I was hoping for a positive news post by now. Sigh.

It will turn up, really it will.

Jen

p.s. that dog may only look innocent. I regularly find unexpected objects in my innocent looking dog's basket.

Nothing yet. Thank you all for your support. We are getting a bit worried, because we are running out of places to look into. It's got to be somewhere, but where?

As for the dog, do you really think he'd bother? He doesn't even have a basket - he sleeps on any old  rug (or sofa, or bed), and leaves his toys all over the place. That's the face he pulled when I told him someone is suspecting him of theft.

I put it to you, Mr Dog, that you have hidden the said earring, contrary to the provisions of the relevant Act and in so doing did knowingly and intentionally deprive my client's wife of the item.

ETA what a lovely dog! He looks like a sweetheart (and criminal mastermind).

He's so cute!  Then again, it's my experience that it's always the innocent-looking ones that cause all the trouble!  Seriously, the earring must be in the house so you're bound to find it when you least expect it.

rotflmao ROFL. Maggie--you crack me up.

*cough*   ...ermm...sorry Davide. Okay, ok....I know I shouldn't be laughing at a time like this. Sorry Bro.

Let's see, did you check the front pocket of her blouse? Or the bed?  (Ok--everyone get your minds out of the gutter--she could've lost it making beds in the morning...jeez).

We have taken the bed apart: linen, mattress, headboard, lifted up the base - lots of the main suspect's hair underneath it, but no diamonds. We haven't been looking at his doo-doo, but he is a very fussy eater.

Also been through every garment DW has been wearing at the weekend - no luck. I think we will just forget about it for a few days, and if it hasn't turned up by month end it will be declared lost. Which is where the fun begins...  Evil

Unquestionably, that is one SMART dog. I dare say, he's probably a secret agent of some sort. Anyway, if he didn't do it (and I tend to think not, he's got his eye on some bigger prize... ), then, he definitely KNOWS what happened. Sure there is no visiting cat? Mine like to "dribble" small items across the floor (at least until the items are "shot" out of play, usually under a door and down the stairs or under a radiator, or down a hole in the floor for some sort of pipe... *SIGH*).

So sorry the ER is still MIA. Could it be in or near a car? Outside near the doorstep? On a window sill? Kitchen (please tell me DW didn't make SOUP)? In or on an overcoat or sweater? Down the drain?

Fun? As in RELPACEMENT fun? Hehe...  devildance

It's not outside the apartment because DW hadn't even opened the front door. She noticed she was missing one earring when she went to brush her teeth after breakfast. The other one was still there, so it's not a case of being "left" somewhere - if we exclude demonic possession, poltergeist and amnesia. It might have ended down a drain, but it's unlikely she wouldn't have heard it going "bling, dling, plunk". I'll check the u-bends just in case.

No cats come to visit either (not that they'd be unwelcome, but they are generally quite wary of the dog), and the nearest squirrel, magpie or rat is - hopefully - miles away.

Replacement fun indeed. I have a couple of ideas already!

She might not have heard it go down the drain, especially if she was focused on something else and with other noise in the background.  I wouldn't be able to hear it if the water was running.  The trap might be worth checking, just in case.   cross

This totally frustrates me. I can't imagine how maddening this must be for you, OMC, and DW. Grrrrrrrrr.  furious3

Kitchen sink after clearing breakfast plates? Drawer where toiletries may be kept? Kid's room? The crummy thing about earrings is after they "freefall" they can get stuck in you hair, on a sweater, down a shirt... then, they can travel ANYWHERE before coming to a final resting place.

Could it have happened sometime EARLIER the day before and no one noticed?

Just a thought - have you looked in the box? I had a lost EC stud scare a while back and although I would have sworn I put both on in the morning, I had been distracted and left one behing in the box. It was the last place I looked of course, because I knew I had put both earrings on.
