I've been meaning to ask all of you this for a while.  Do any of you store your jewelry in a safe  at home and if you do, what brand did you go with?  I'm thinking about installing one in my new house specifically for jewelry, but the one that I'm researching (Brown) is horribly expensive and extremely heavy.  I'm curious to know what you do.  Thanks!

Hi Michi,
In the jewelry business, a safe's weight acually determines how much insurance you can buy. Bigger and heavier= higher insurable value.
Think about this- if the safe is not heavy, what's the value? Someone could simply walk away with it! Safes in the jewelry business are bolted to the floor.

It seems to me getting some sort of home safe is not a bad idea. But I don't know that buying a professional level expensive, cumbersome safe makes a lot of sense.
Insurance is really the better choice.
After all, you want to wear the diamond outside and have it covered.

Hope this helps!

Good point as I have wondered if you all had one too!!! Ok, forgive my foggy memory.  But those small safes you can buy at Target (at 3AM I can't remember the name) but my friend had bought one for about $200 and when you open the safe, I want to say that inside you could bolt it to the floor.  Naturally one could rip that out (assumably) but I too have been wanting to buy one.  I wish all my fingers were the same size so I could wear all my rings!!!

Side question: about fire/heat proof...diamonds damage in high heat, so do papers....could someone recommend a nice heat resistant safe?

I'm also no help on brands as I'm not sure I could highly recommend the one we have. It's just one that bolts to the floor (and I'll admit, it's not bolted to the floor yet)...but do any of you watch "To Catch a Theif"? I think it's on TLC. Anyway, they've had several shows where they've been able to steal the safes...One because the owners had not even bothered to bolt it to the floor (like us   Embarrassed ), and the other (a gun safe mounted to a wall in a closet) was only mounted with screws and they ripped it off the wall. It took two big guys to do it and both of them to carry it out of the house, but they got it! They recommend on the show a fire proof safe bolted to the floor or wall...into the studs. A thief would have to get the safe open to remove it if it was secured like that.

There are safes and security boxes that are fire proof! I have a security box that I keep my money collection in! It says right on the package for either item whether of not it is fire proof. My parents have one they keep all their important documents in, like all insurance policies, wills, ect.

Our house before this one had a safe built into the floor in one of the closets, but I never used it.  I just put whatever I do not wear regularly into the safe deposit at the bank.  Only takes 5 minutes to go retrieve something I want.

Thanks for the info, David and everyone!

I have insurance on my bigger pieces, but it's not cost effective to insure all of my jewelry.  I have some pieces that are not that expensive, but sentimental and irreplaceable and we travel a lot, so I'd rather be safe (groan) than sorry! And I'd want it to be accessible.  The whole reason I got enthralled with a jewelry safe is the cool jewelry trays!  There's also a slot for important papers.  I was just shocked at the weight - as much as a gun safe for pete's sake (and a whole lot smaller)!  We're building a house right now and I can just see the conversation with my contractor, "oh, I have to make that floor even more weight bearing and yes, I know, I know..."  So I thought I'd go down a different track before I went there with him or stuck it in an inconvenient part of the house, like the garage.  Should have thought of it before, but didn't even cross my mind.  I know David is right about the weight, I just kind of thought a smaller safe would not be that heavy.

Sorry WM!  Grin

Amy - I think I may go down the gun safe route, even though a gun will never be in there!  Perhaps I can get it customized a bit for shelves and then buy jewelry trays.  The one I was looking at weighed a whopping 1500 lbs   dontknow and was smaller than a gun safe.  Thanks again for the tips.

We had...wait..i'm getting confused.....we used to...wait, that's not right either - my former partner has several safes in his house - more for 'decoration' than anything to do with security - they are very cool looking.  Antique things from old banks and so forth.  Most of them have been drilled and the weight removed - but there is one that is so heavy that three men couldn't lift it - and I had to polish the floor around it!!

I've got an electronic safe - it's fireproof - I wanted it mainly for documents.  And you can bolt it to the floor/wall from the inside...which i've never done.  Silly really, but there you go.

BR - LOL!  I'll have to install my safe when my DH is away on business, haha.  Just to make sure it gets installed correctly!  Yeah, right!   Grin
