Ohhhh, thanks !!!  We are all soooo excited!  The word "granny" sounds so, well, old.  We are going to be "Granna and Pop" or "Nonna and Papa".  Which do yall like best...I can't decide?!  I guess not to worry, whatever the little thing calls me will be music to my ears!  My daughter, (the mom-to-be) has an April b-day too!

Yall are tempting me with the beautiful jewels!   Wink

I don't know about you but when my kids start having kids I'm going to insist on being called "granddad" (instead of grandpa or papa). It doesn't sound so old and after all I AM THE GRANDEST DAD!!!--LOL!

I had to laugh because my mom said the same thing when I found out I was expecting my first one. She said that no one was allowed to call her grandma. Instead she wanted to be called grand! Yep you heard right GRAND!!! And yes she is insane!!! LOL But she got a tear in her eye when my first said gramma for the first time! They call my dad pawpaw!

I have to think of something a little different.  This child will be the fifth generation on both sides of my DH's family.  We already have everything from Grandmother and Grandaddy, to Papaw and MeMe.  Now I'm kinda leaning toward Nonna and Papa, or Non and Pop.  (My DH would be such a cute "Pop"..lol.

Instead of a diamond treat for me, now I'm thinking of a diamond treat for daughter, since her b-day and due date are both in April, the diamond month!   I shouldn't be so selfish and want everything for myself!

People call different grandparents different things?

To me, both of my grandmothers where "Grandma," and both of my grandfathers are "Grandpa."

Maybe it's the part of the country I live in?  I've never heard anyone call their grandparents anything else really.

I think it does depend on where you live Annie, as I too have never heard anything other than Grandpa and Grandma

First, huge congrats, MADORA!!!!!!

Snooper and Annie, that is REALLY interesting!  It must be a regional thing.  My Midwestern grandparents were Grandma and Grandpa (actually, Grandpa is still going strong at 97   Smiley), but my Texas grandmother was Mam-Ma.  I have known of Nanas, Poppys, and all kinds of similar variations.  It's a big decision :-).

I never heard any other terms till I moved down south. Grandmas are often referred by me-maw or maw-maw and pa-pa or paw-paw!

Yeah, my granparents were grandma and grandpa for me too.  But, my daughter calls my parents Grammy and Grampy.  Not sure how that got started, but it has stuck.  I hear more and more different things all of the time.

Interesting!  Madora like you said, anything they will call you will be music to your ears.   How sweet of you to think ahead on giving your daughter a beautiful gift for the birth of her child/your grandchild!!!!!!!!    I think that is just another wonderful event to insite a diamond gift!!!!!

I loved calling my grandparents on my mom's side  "NANA and Grampy".............  now my children call my mom and dad that!!

This is a fun thread!  I grew up with grandmas and grandpas, so I never expected anything else.  When my SIL was pregnant, my dad became insistant on Papa (no idea why) and my mom went thru a whole shopping list, including Grandmere (um, we are SOOO not French!) and Bubbe, which I banned for her, as she is absolutely NOT a Bubbe.  So they settled on Grandma and Papa, and my son calls DH's mom Bubbe (which she absolutely IS).   DH's father is not alive, but we refer to him as Zaide(pronounced zay-dee).

I get a little annoyed at the Papa thing, as my dad is very fit and young looking for his age, and whenever I go out somewhere with him and my son, people always think he is my husband instead (ICK!), as Papa could really go either way for grandpa or daddy.  It bugged DH a lot at first, but he is OK with it now (I think).  It is sort of compounded by the fact that my son calls DH Abba, which not many people recognize as meaning daddy.

Oh, and I remember one time when I was probably 8 or 9 I announced to my mom that I was going to come up with something new to call my grandparents so I could distinguish them better (I think it was granny and grandpop for one set).  My mom told me I had better run it by them first, as they may be less than thrilled with a name change, but I didn't have the guts, so all stayed as it was.

The grandparents all went crazy wanting Maria to use cutesy, baby talk sounding terms for each of them (including the steps who would get insulted/fight with the biogrands) . After age 4, she flatly refused and each grandparent became grandma/pa firstname.

I`ve just been catching up with the thread about names for grandparents Madora.
My grand daughter`s other grand parent likes to be called Nannie because she`s Welsh but because I rarely see my grand daughter and I`m a couple of hundred miles away, I`m always known as " Grandma Telephone ". I think she`s heard my son say Maegan your Grandma`s on the telephone so many times, she thinks it`s my name !
