and I'm a little bit shocked, to be honest.  I'm pinching myself and can't believe it might be happening.  Long story short I'm self employed, love what I do, have flexible hours and really life is good. Money is tight because of the population that I serve, but I really feel good at the end of the day.

However my husband and daughter have a genetic condition that is progressive and we don't know how much longer dh can work.   We've been talking for awhile about me getting a full time job, with benefits so we don't have to be in crisis mode if he has to stop working soon.

This is a challenge for a variety of reasons and if it's going to happen I would want to make a career change. My dream would be to go into jewelry, but I'm not certified, have no experience and most sales jobs are commission based so I don't think that could be a primary income. Well, something amazing happened today.

I was talking to this lovely couple today that were referred to me and wanted some help. They were in town for a few months-maybe til March because they had retired, but the woman had been asked to come back to her job to help the company out.

As we're talking she comments on some (DBL!) jewelry I'm wearing and I smiled, said it was my passion and got back to the topic at hand. Further out she asks about something specific and I told her I'd bore her to death, but gave her the details telling her why it was so special to me and how it came to be etc. She then asks if I'd thought about going into the business. I laugh and say it's a dream of mine, and that I'm starting to consider getting certified this year.

Turns out she was called back to work by a large, high end jeweler in the area-a place she's worked for 30 years. She had retired, trained someone else and they didn't work out. So the company called her back, gave her a huge bonus, rented them a car and an apartment so she could stay on until she found someone she could train at which point she could leave again. She's their diamond buyer. I just about died.

I told her I have NO qualifications at all, no real resume, no nothing. I just have a love of jewelry. She said that's how she got started and that's what she's looking for. It's a full time position with full benefits, 401K, the works. They'd pay to get me certified and I'd get to attend the gem shows etc. I about turned inside out. She's heavily involved in the process and said all they're getting is people who work in factories, non-jewelry retail etc. because of the wording of the ad. To date, no one has applied with a sincere love of jewelry.

She's talking to the owner on Monday and I'm supposed to call, but she said I was more than perfect and the fact I knew what I did about what I was wearing meant I knew more than 75% of the people working there. I'm dying. Could this be it? Is it possible that I could be getting a REAL JOB?!

I'm freaking out. This could be a dream come true. She's telling me, "you'd have a tiny office, and be looking at diamonds all day long. Do you think you could do that? It can be really isolating." I about cried. Please let this be real!

Yes, she's the real deal.  She gave me her business card, contact info and was thrilled because the faster she gets someone trained the faster she can retire....for real.   I mean, before we ever met she was telling me she wanted to get in to see me quickly because she's retired and just back here to help out her old company until they hired someone new.  Her husband came with her today and they were both telling me what a great company it is to work for, and how happy she'd been there.

I know the person she was referred through fairly well and it's definitely legit...I just don't know that I'm as "perfect" as she thinks.  I mean, I have three little kids-all in school, but if they get sick, I'm going to have to call out.  It's just what it is.  My background has NOTHING to do with jewelry, so even though I love it that might not be enough.  I don't know.  It's an amazing opportunity, I just don't know how things will pan out.  I'm going to find out though!

The nice part is the company has been around a long time and is clearly stable.  The job is 10 minutes from my house and a half a mile from my kid's school.  It really could be PERFECT.  Thanks for the good wishes!  I really would LOVE to be in the business, to start at the bottom and work my way up and this could be exactly the right opportunity.

Fingers crossed for you.  Finding a great paying full time job is hard enough - finding one in a field you love is even harder to do!

Don't know how "great" the pay will be initially, but I have pretty high hopes that I'd have a future there if I did well enough.  It's not DBL, but since I don't live in NY this is second best.  lol.  It will give me a very eclectic resume if nothing else.  Out of the circus, into medical school, ordained and then into jewelry.

It's a somewhat unique path, I guess.  lol.

Best phonecall I've had so far. I hope this opportunity is as good for you, and that you have as much fun as I have. Fingers crossed, and good luck!

This is such an amazing opportunity! I really hope it works out for you!

I wish my local jeweler was big enough to hire extra staff - I'd be begging for a job!
