well, i spent july in europe, having locked away all my sparklies in a friend's safe in her safer neighborhood. my neighborhood is not so gooooood....her retired hubby is home all day so i know the precious is safe.

she is delayed in her vacation for another month. aargh! i want my jools! tired of sterling.

hubby thinks i'm nuts, but i know that you all will understand. ha ha.

for those who don't know me, i was a regular on, erm, on another diamond forum. good to be here! i felt rather lonely in my diamond interests. it's nice that this forum moves and everyone is so nice and friendly.

I know what you mean!  If I accidentally forget to put mine on after a shower, even if I'm already in bed, I get up just to put them on.  I can't stand to be without them.  I so attached!

Hi Ladykemma! Nice to see you here.

If I remember rightly, you have some beauties! No wonder you're itching to get them back! (Am I right in thinking you have an absolute stunner of a pear?)

I'd go mad without mine. If I take them off for work, I spend the day twitchy and thinking I've lost them! Hope you are reunited soon!

hi! yes i am the "pawn shop pear" lady.

We had an interesting year on my street.  a nasty family moved into a rental property on our left. teenage and older kids with absentee parent. dad who checked in once a week or so. gang member kids. nice younger son who told us adults on the street what was happening. the gang member kids were planning to steal out neighbor's nice truck, they broke into my hubby's car, various car break-ins on the street, they kept going on my roof (why?), and lastly a drive by shooting which had all the neighbors of the street out on their yard with their pointed fingers violently in mom's face.

well, needless to say they have moved (yay!), and my goodies were locked in my friends safe for the duration of this trip. we are considering moving but giving that the house is "paid fer", seems to be a PIA. we have adopted a wait and see approach, to see who moves in.

yes, i wore my tiny quarter carat original wedding ring on this trip, to "blend in" and for safety.  i thought it might be crass to wear a honker in durham, newcastle, and carlisle. i made a good decision, chose appropriate clothing/shoes,  and didn't stand out as a tourist.

i noticed on this trip  that i really appreciate this stone. it always has been a good cut, good height, and i noticed that i didn't smack it much.

but i did notice that the further north i got, the less scintillation and contrast i saw.  the brilliance was there. i wonder if this is why canadians and people in the UK don't seem to be impressed with the larger stones?  to put it plainly, as i went further north, my stone went "blah".  a ruby or a sapphire would have been more impressive. thoughts?

i also noticed that the high street jewelers sold tiny stones for enormous prices.

Blah plus bad prices would make colors more appealing....
Ok this is n00b question, but if you haven't been out of the states, where can you find information on how to blend in a bit more at your destination?
Also, I admire your pawn shop prowess.

Hi Ladykemma!

Well I am originally from Darlington in County Durham and when I go back, I wear all my jewels regardless!  If you've ever been to Darlington and paid close attention to your surroundings, you are probably amazed that I've never been mugged - me too!  I put this down to knowing the town very well and being aware of when an atmosphere changes and also I know the places to avoid.  That's not a luxury you have as a tourist though so I can understand not wanting to travel with your precious!

I've never noticed a change in the way my jewelry looks there - odd!  It's rare to find a good sized diamond in the UK - unless you are in London or another truly major city (anything over 2cts is extremely hard to find).  Everything in the UK is expensive and even more so with the current exchange rate.  Of all my friends, I have by far the largest ER.  The next largest diamond belongs to my best friend and she wears a .50ct.  She thinks I am insane and has told me so on occassion!

Thank you!

DJ
I just noticed you once lived in Darlington. My late husband lived there a place called Hartburn

'Hartburn' is in/near 'Stockton', right?  I never spent much time out in the Teeside area.  My mother's family all came from North Yorkshire so we gravitated more towards 'Northallerton' and 'Thirsk' than 'Middlesborough' and 'Stockton'.  I seriously miss the rolling fields of North Yorkshire.   Cry

Hi LadyKemma

Funny how we all find each other!

diamondjunkie,   My husbands ancestors are from the UK. I wonder if Stockton is where Richard Stockton is from? He was one of the founders of Princeton University. And he signed  the Declaration of Independence.  He goes way back in my husband's family line!

'Hartburn' is in/near 'Stockton', right?

DJ -- Have you ever heard of a town called - I kid you not, "Giggleswick"?
I have a friend who is from there -- it is in the Yorkshire downs, or dales, I forget.  But it sounds (and is) quaint, as is she!!!
She wears antique garnets and pearls -- would never consider something like a diamond!! Too American, she thinks!
So when I wear my stuff, I get some sideways looks. Anyway, we like each other regardless!
