I feel like I'm finally seeing progress!

All 3 bathrooms for mostly done (just need faucets and touch up paint) and the kitchen cabinets and counters went in this weekend! We finished laying down the floors in the kitchen/dining room... and we've finished painting all except the walls to the 4 bedrooms....

Granted.... there is still LOTS of work to do before we can even THINK about moving in but seeing those things accomplished made it FEEL we're closer!

Wow, you are surely making progress! Wish I could say the same. Any ideawhen you can move in?
Gemelli, I would love to see step by step pics of your living wall - hadn't heard of this before and it sounds really neat!

Good idea...  I'll keep the camera handy.  Just trying to round up materials and plot the construction at the moment, but it looks like it will be very simple to set up.

We have had some personal stuff going on here the last few days and I have needed to distract myself.  I put down a new floor about a year ago and when I did that, I ripped out the double doors that led from the hall into the living/dining room.  Well, this project has kept my mind busy the last couple of days - I put up a double archway.  Please forgive the final clamp at the top - those pieces were the last ones and the adhesive is still wet.

Anyway, it looks so much better.  I'm hoping to get the rest of my skirt board put down over the next couple of days.  If I have time, I need to re-tile the hearth around my fireplace as I had to pull that up to put the floor down.  Should all be a nice surprise for my DH when he gets home to.

Awesome job, DJ!
Looks like a beautiful house. I wish I was handy. DH is, but also a perfectionist with a low boredom threshold. Or to put it another way, nothing ever gets finished!

Looks great - you must be exhausted!

Thanks so much everyone!  Snooper, DH would never even START something like this!  The man is so DIY challenged it's not even funny.  When I say 'I laid a new floor' I really mean that 'I laid a new floor'!!!  Everything that has been replaced, redone, repainted in this house has been with my hands.  I once asked him to cut a few pieces of wood for me but quickly realized that if I wanted it done right, I should just do it myself!  I love him, but he's just not good at this stuff!

GL, that should have read 'skirting board' and I think Americans call is base board - the boards that go along the bottom of the walls.  I have to redo the living/dining room and the hallway so it's going to take me a while.  I've done a little but there's lots more to get on with.

Thanks too for all the compliments on the house.  Now if only the garden looked half as good...............urg!!!

DJ - you mean you are a master builder/carpenter/plumber (according to your earlier posts when you ripped your plumbing out of your bathroom??) plus bodybuilder/workout Queen, plus Internet moderator, plus writer, plus jewelry advisor, plus mother, plus wife, plus whatever else you do?

YOU ARE INCREDIBLE.  I wish this country could bottle up your energy and use it to fix all our problems. Somehow, I think things would go better!!

CONGRATULATIONS ON DOING ALL YOU DO, AND DOING IT SO WELL!!!

LOL!  I wouldn't say 'master'!  Thanks though Titania - you've really lifted my spirits!  I may not be able to calm the current Iran crisis but I'd make sure the White House looked spiffy!  If you look eastward you will see a rosy glow on the horizon............I'm blushing  a08

You are so sweet!   friends

Man, do I have to do everything around here?

« Reply #89 on: October 21, 2007, 04:38:28 PM »

Thought I'd resurrect this thread to show you a project DW & I completed.

We designed and acted as General Contractors for our home that we built 13 years ago.  We have spent the last 12 years adding detailed woodworking throughout to reflect the early 20th century (late 1920's) which was our inspiration for designing our home.

Here's a recent one. I designed and help build the livingroom paneling and opening to our foyer. I found 3 outdoor tapered columns from a 1920's home that was being demolished. We stripped, painted and refurbished them. I love the scale of these!  Designing the paneling was a challenge because of the angled wall. I spent 3 days drawing it out on the wall to get just the right scale. The corbels under the mantel were handmade by a carpenter friend of mine.

WOW!   omg  You have such a beautiful home, djm!  The panelling looks fantastic and the columns are something else - I love them in the entrance to the room.  Gorgeous!  I'll bet you are very proud of how it looks.  There is something very satisfying about putting your own mark on your home.  I love the diamond pattern wall paper in the other room too, although I am betting that was a bit of a bugger to put up straight!  Just beautiful!

Thanks DJ!! You really can't see the detail in the corbels or routed edges of the panels--there's lots of shadow lines which I love--very reminescent to early 20th century homes.

As for the wallpaper--we had that professionally installed. I have no patience for stuff like that--LOL!!

A wise decision! Professionally done is the only way to go with wallpaper patterns you could potentially hang a)squint b) crooked c) upside down or d) and this one's from bizarre experience - sideways.

My friend had a 'nice Regency stripe' that was hung horizontally. It was as a result of an argument about his decorating skills and her husband did it to spite her. She got the last laugh by declaring that she loved it and keeping it for nigh on 15 years.

BTW you have my rug!

Jen, talk about vengeance!!!

DJ--here's a close up of the wallpaper in the foyer. (I know my limitations--LOL!)

Here's another part of the house that I added wainscotting and paneling. It is our kitchen/dinette area where we have our infamous family debates over dinner. This is a view of it from the mudroom/back entry. To the right you can see our back stairways. (where I got busted with DS#2).
The first one gives you the idea of the colors but isn't as clear as the second picture.

Here's the close up of the wainscotting. It is an octagonal room. I added a small picture shelf 3/4 of the height.
