You are such a cool dad, DJM.  Your kids are so, so lucky.  I hope DS#1 is doing okay - been thinking about you.

Okay, I am going to try not to yell but I am so impressed that I'm going to have a hard time: has anyone of you tried Cascadian Farms' organic granola bars?  HO-LEE COW!!!  They are the best granola bars I've ever tried!  You HAVE to try them!

DJ, that looks like a whole lot of cool kit to help you break limbs! Please, please be careful! Wink 11lb loss is good going - congrats. Hope you feel better for it. I've lost 14lbs so far, and I do feel a little better, but I still have a long way to go to get back to my pre pregnancy size. Man, did I pile on the weight while I was expecting. Loved every minute of it though, so you can't have everything! It's coming off at 1 - 2lbs per week, which I reckon is a sensible rate that makes it likely to stay off, but at this rate, it will take me a fair bit of time to get to a weight I'm happy with again. I just have to stick with the sensible eating and regular brisk walking and be patient, I suppose. Patient is not one of my strong points.

GL, I'm always amazed at how many calories are in innocent looking food. I quite like the weightwatchers points plan for that reason. I can keep a fairly close tally of how much I eat v how much I actually need to eat to lose weight. Oh, and my Dr recommended an extra 500 calories a day for breastfeeding- does 300 leave you hungry, or should I try to drop mine a little? My Dr looks to weigh about 900lbs, so I'm taking her advice here with a pinch of (low sodium) salt. Grin

So I'm losing weight and I'm reasonably happy with it. I'm never going to stick to any sort of diet like low carbs/ high protein or whatever,  so this way I know roughly how much food I can eat, then I just have to work at getting a good balance. I worked in a clinic that specialised in treating eating disorders many years ago and I'm always a little suspicious of 'diets.'

Swimming hasn't been a great success. DH takes the baby, but I spend more time sitting by the side of the pool feeding her than actually swimming. She seems to be hungry all day every day. I probably burn more calories feeding her than I ever could by swimming anyway. It's just an excuse to wear my very lovely new tankini and a nice fluffy robe at the spa.  Grin

Robin, you are really dedicated! I'm inspired by you, even if reading your workout routine makes me a little tired. Hope you're enjoying the results of all that hard work, you're doing amazingly well.

DJM- man, you are SO spot on with some of the things you wrote.

I remember a time when my daughter was around 13 or so.
IN one felt swoop I went from knowing everything to knowing nothing!
It does shake you because they depend on you so much than all of a sudden, they have to show you they are NOT dependant on you- and that would hurt anyone......

Best thoughts and prayers to DS#1

I must have reared a dysfunctional family lol.
In reverse order ....
Son number 3 was a teenage pain in the ass and is now an early 20`s pain in the
ass... think of Ozzie Osbourne crossed with Stephen Spielberg, University student studying film production, drummer in a rock band, off the wall character and big bushy beard, trousers around his hips and for some strange reason seems irresistable to other people`s teenage daughters ....

Son number 2 was another teenage pain in the ass but at 30 he now works with other people`s teenage pains in the ass for a living and keeps them out of bother....graduated from Uni as a Social Worker, walked out of the Uni vowing never ever to be a Social Worker and worked in youth offenders insitutes before becoming a Police Officer, also an olympic wrestler who teaches the sport to teenage boys in his spare time.

Son number 1 was also a teenage pain in the ass but at 33 is rearing his own 2 year old ( temporary angel but in 11 years time bound to be pain in the ass and his second on the way ! )... 17 years with the Military but soon learned that toddlers don`t respect rank lol

So I guess all in all, my 3 pains in the ass got over it and one day when oldest son was taking umbrage at youngest son, he once asked " was I as big a pain in the ass as he is ?? " .......... I replied ........ " hell yesssssssss, BIGGER ! "

ROFL!!!!

Do teenage boys really need to know how to wrestle? Wouldn't that just be the icing on the cake! Kinda like when I was in the Arnmy and I encountered the Army Cadets - we're arming these strange teenage creatures??

What have I let myself in for? Grin

Somehow I feel the parents have hijacked this thread, but since I'm in such good company, I'll share some more.

My DD is 15.  All attitude.  Has an opinion about everything, usually the opposite of mine.  Buys the most expensive clothes and makeup available.  I'm sending her to the best school around, driving 2 hours each day, so she can get into the university of her choice.  Her only comment?  You don't have to have a college degree to be rich.  The examples she gives?  Britney Spears and the King of Saudi Arabia.  I can explain those way, but I hope she doesn't find out that Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, and Michael Dell don't have degrees either.  I don't know if she knows who Warren Buffett is.  Her father is a self-made man as well, although my ex is in the light porn industry now that we're divorced.  Do you guys see any problems with these role models?   Huh?

More about my step-sons later.

Lynne, as someone with a Masters Degree in social work who has never practiced it a day in her life, your post about your son cracked me up!

Jen, I don't remember where I saw that breastfeeding requires 300 calories, but I figured I should underestimate since I probably underestimate how much I eat.  The baby is certainly thriving and I am not particularly hungry (uh, but that doesn't mean I don't eat plenty), so the number from the website seems to work,  I am also losing about 1-2 lbs a week, which I am sure is best if not as satisfying as the first month after giving birth when I was losing a pound a day.  I also cannot handle high protein or cutting out desserts, so the calorie counting works, as I can eat anything I want as long as I control the amount.

Dang. Guess it wouldn't hurt to drop down to 300 in that case. I'll just put this slice of pie back in the fridge...

The rain finally stopped, so I went for a lovely long walk today. I'm feelng less lethargic but it made me HUNGRY! Sea air!

So, okay, DJ?  I went to the gym today?  And did those v-ups and pendulums (just a few of each to start-- the v-ups are pretty hard, but the pendulums?  WAY hard!) and my push-ups and the Roman chair thingy, and I did arms today, increasing my weight and decreasing my reps...  and I think I just might be a wee bit sore tomorrow....  Grin

Tomorrow I plan to climb and swim.  I won't lift at all, as it's just too much to climb and lift on the same day.  Therefore, as I'm trying your suggestion of breaking upper body into arms and chest/shoulders, I'll do chest/shoulders on Saturday, and I'll do abs again then, too, if I'm not in hideous pain  from today's outing Grin.

Dont forget your back Robin, very important. Chest/shoulders is a good complimentary split of body parts. Back and arms would be another good one Smiley

LOL!  This made me laugh!  I know, I should have sympathy but whenever I trained someone with abs, my goal was to have them scared to sneeze the next day!   Grin  It sounds like you did great, Robin - well done!  Let me know how you feel tomorrow.

I've now done the "DJ abs workout" twice, with a third go planned for later today.  I did a few more reps of the V-ups and pendulums, and that was fine.  My back was a bit sore from the roman chair, so that's good, I suppose.  (Sore muscles, not anything else.)

Now that I'm doing the v-ups, I'm noticing other people doing them, too.  I've seen two variations so far-- one young woman was doing them on the mat, and a man was doing them on the bench, but gripping the bench behind him (around waist level) for balance.

Thoughts?

Good going Robin! I always did the V-ups with a bench as you describe (note past tense) Grin but that was when I had to do Army PT. There might be a more humane or gender appropriate version!

I lost 4lbs last week. Lots of walking and careful eating and I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself! @I'll have to take things up a gear now that my exam is over and I have more time. I'm actually looking forward to going back to the gym, as tedious and dull as I find it. Possibly because there's a spa there too and I can get my nails done in anticipation of my new ring! Plus it will be blissful to swim and soak in the hot tub, sauna and steam room again.

Robin, make sure your back is pressed up against the back pad of the roman chair.  This can be hard to do as the handles are not usually adjustable and are made to fit a mans forearm length.   Roll Eyes  What exercises do you do for your lower back?

As for holding onto the bench: that's no problem as long as you don't pull with your arms to add some momentum to getting your legs up.  That's easily done as the body is all too willing to cheat!  I advise holding the bench if you are twisting your hips to hit your obliques with v-ups and also if you have progressed to holding a medicine ball between your feet.  Just don't pull with your hands/arms.  The trick is to take it slow and easy - no momentum allowed!  I would bank that you'll see men performing it too quickly and thinking they're cool.  Yeah, if they slowed down they wouldn't be able to do nearly as many.   Roll Eyes

Oh, and yes you can do them on the floor too.  How are you finding the tricep dips?  I can make those harder if they are too easy.  Let me know.

Jen!  Woot!  Good for you!  I found it easy to drop weight after I had DD (once I started trying........).  Breastfeeding certainly helps too.

As for me, I am just 1/2lb shy of having lost a stone, which for you American folks means 14lbs.  I am feeling much better about myself and there's a 100% improvement in how I look in clothes.  Just great.  The snowboarding is going well: I can turn, I can brake, I can come down the stunt slope forwards/backwards braking and turn out of both types of brakes.  Oh, and I can also fall spectacularly.   Grin  Hoping to get some more lessons next week so that I can progress to the big slope.  I am so ready to get up there!

DJ, well done on your loss, you're shifting it at quite a rate! But can we please pretend that my loss is down to hard work and dedication? Evil

Mostly it's because I'm too tired to walk to the fridge right now if I'm honest.

So TWO totally awesome things happened to me today!   bliss

First, when I got up this morning my weight finally registered that I have lost a full stone/14lbs!  Oh Lordy I was so happy!

Second, my snowboarding instructor happened to have a free day from his classes today so he gave me an extended lesson AND I GOT TO GO DOWN THE BIG SLOPE!!  OMG!  I cannot explain the joy!  I can't!  It was so much freakin' fun!  We started off braking and turning a few times then, one time at the top, he just said, "Go - show me what you can do!" and I didn't need telling twice!  I just took off!  For the most part I had no idea where he was.  By the time we reached the bottom I was positively bouncing, beaming and belly laughing!

This folks has been THE BEST DAY OF MY YEAR SO FAR!!!  I cannot begin to tell you how deliriously happy I am!   bliss

And as for my instructor -  Score-101010  He rocks!!!!

Wow, I am super-impressed DJ!  I was a big into ice skating when I was young, and thought I would be able to learn skiing fairly easily as a result.  I was dating my DH (boyfriend at the time) and he wanted to go on this skiing trip.  He loved skiing and he's an absolute pro, having grown up in New England.  So I got the cute little outfits, took lessons, tried to be confident, yada, yada, yada.  Long story short, I was terrible and terrified.  I tell ya, my ego took as many tumbles as I did during that trip.
