and boy was it a hoot!  I'm not sure what else to say, lol.

I went in today having submitted a resume and brought an application detailing my work history for a job that I have NO previous training or skills for.  Basically a woman who came to me for help ended up asking me to apply for a position that needed to be filled.  I told her I have never worked in the jewelry industry, have no training or education etc. I just love the products.

Anyway, I went in and the gentleman who interviewed me was delightful.  He asked me about diamonds for an hour or so, quizzing me about all different things (what are the 4 C's, what the diamond color scale, name the most popular cuts, how is clarity determined etc. etc. etc.)  He asked if someone came to me and said they had $3k and wanted a one and a half carat round what questions would I ask.  First I laughed and told him I'd delicately ask them to reconsider either their budget, size or choice of stone.  He was amused, and kept moving.

I loved him and apparently the feeling was mutual.  He complimented me on very specific things and told me he'd love to have me working there.  Then he decided to test me.  He had someone bring in a tray of diamonds, all mounted, and handed me a loupe.  He had me grade them.  And if that wasn't awesome enough, he had people come in and watch.  Talk about stress!  I've never graded a diamond before!  And I was able to keep a sense of humor which was a bonus.

I did well (was only off by a wee bit on all of them-called a G VS2 an H/I SI, called an E I1 and F SI2 and so on.  It was kinda crappy because the diamonds weren't cleaned before giving them to me so that didn't help my lack of practical knowledge.

Anyway, ultimately he said that he was looking for more experience but if I wanted to enroll in the GIA course that would change things.  He also said that if he didn't find someone with more experience I was his first choice.

So that was an interesting day.  Cool experience.  I don't know that this is how I'm going to break into the business though!

Sounds like it went very well, grading not withstanding!  i'm keeping my  cross for you!  Seems like they have great folks there, and at least you graded conservative on the color rather than the other way around.  Sheesh!  I couldn't have done half so good.  I hope we get another happy alert from you soon!

It sounds like you had a great interview!  A natural choice...and clearly, with some experience and training...you're an excellent prospect!  He'd be crazy not to give you the break you deserve!   I hope he can hear me!  director

HA!  They do NOT have to know how much time I spend online looking at diamonds (which is what allowed me to come even remotely close on my gradings.)  Honestly?  Most of that is thanks to the education on CDi.  Yeah, I visit and read other forums, but none are as unbiased and informative as this one.  LOVE to all of you!
