Okay, I've ordered this dress for a cocktail event, an auction to benefit my son's school. I am difficult to fit so I thought this one might work. So many of the cocktail dresses (all of them, really) have an empire waist.

Well I'm right under 5'11" and long waisted so this style looks horrendous on me. Really. My mom and the sales lady at Saks were laughing uncontrollably. We had fun but I found NOTHING.

So this is the dress:

Which belt? And I'd rather spend no more than $80 for the belt because I'm not sure I'm going to wear it with much else.

This one is hard to see but it has sequins on it and ties. I'm kind of liking it.

I was wondering how it would look without a belt...

But, if you are going with a belt I like the first one  Smiley

Very pretty dress BTW!  I am sure that you will look great no matter what you decide on!

I like all of them...sorry I am no help but they all kinda look alike!  Maybe the first one is the best choice since it looks alot like the one the model is wearing.    I have seen pictures of you and with your "smokin" body, you will look great!!!!!!! icon_thumleft  (5'11"...NO FAIR!!)  ~Ronda

You're quite kind Rhonda. I'm kind of liking that first one, too.

The reasons I need a belt.

It will go "straight at the waist". I've tried on enough dresses to know this. so I end up looking thick waisted. I want one that sort of sits on top of my hips so it looks like I have a shape and am not shaped like a boy.

I have to agree with everyone else! I would stick to the color the model is wearing.  I think if you went all black, it would blend in and void out the purpose of you wearing the belt.

Umm, I wish I was tall:) My friends in HS were 5'10" and I felt tiny!! I like the sash that she's holding too!

Now on a side note, I LOVE the pic w/ jeans and the flowing "scarf" thing.  That's cute too!

I'll put in my vote for belt #1, but I do like the last one you posted also. They're both have a little pizazz to them.

You'll be happy to hear that dress shopping isn't just a pain for you tall folk.  I'm not quite 5'2" and somewhat, shall we say well endowed??, and I could search for weeks to find a dress which fit.  Actually, I have been looking for weeks because I need one to wear to my wedding....

Side note: Some actress from the move Dreamgirls is wearing a pair of shoes with 30cts of diamonds to the Oscars...

I love the dress!  Definitely #1!  How lucky you are to be just under 5'11!

Lucky? Go shopping with me and you really won't feel that way. My clothing budget is minimal simply because I can't find much. Too short in the arms, too short in the length, etc.  I think if I were bigger in build, I might have an easier time. But my shoulders and build are narrow so it's more difficult. I haven't been shopping since Thanksgiving. And I found nothing then either.

Okay, so I went to go order #1. They don't have my size!!!  Huh?

So I'll keep looking and see if that belt is sold elsewhere.

Thanks for your votes, guys. And for the record, I am 5'10.65". So not quite 5'11".

Annie, I am a five foot two F cup. And wide. My gown was a one-off Judd Waddell made for a bridal magazine editor...solid silk and alencon lace and found for $150 on Ebay....hunting in stores is HORRIBLE if you are short or heavy.
Indiebride.com has a wedding dress classified section, and the Kvetch section is a great place to find leads on dresses of all budget ranges, types, and sizes.
I don't know your size, but if you are anywhere near an actual street 18 and want to borrow the gown...let me know?
WM, I wish I could give you advice, but my daughter wants to put me on How Do I Look?

"How do I look?" must be a show on TV. I thought your wedding gown was beautiful.

I searched 6 months for a wedding dress. I ended up having to get a size 10 Long and having to special order it and then have it almost remade since I was lost inside it. I think the alterations alone cost over $200 and that was over 20 years ago.

So I guess if you are a more standard size, it's not difficult. I have not owned a blouse in over 15 years. I just cannot find one that fits so I've given up. I can find jeans. And I can find capris. They had better never go out of style.

Thanks so much for the offer EMJ! You looked great in your wedding dress, but I'm going for something slightly more unconventional.  Perhaps I'll start a thread....

I feel the pain with the blouses WM!

And I think I might get that one because it is available in my size. But perhaps I can get the dress and shop in an actual store first. We have the store that carries #4.

WM, my first choice would have been the #1 belt, but since that one's out of stock I'd go for the #2 belt. I love all the sequins! It would add a lot of PIZAZZ to your dress.

Good luck.

Thanks you guys. The dress has been mailed, the shoes are on their way. I'm going to try some stores, then go to the internet. But that gives me an idea of what to look for.

The dress came, the shoes came. The dress fits great, shoes fit great. I have a belt that I like with it. So it's a done deal. I do wish the dress had some more color but it's pretty. A bit of tan from a bottle and it does look fine. I added the tan just to make sure. Winter pale and a black dress just don't go. But a dash of color woke it up. I wish it was as long on me as it is on the model.  It's long enough though.

Thanks for asking. It's like wearing a piece of art.
