Just wanted to get the word out. I got this from my vet's this afternoon.  Two weeks late, but better than never.   Sad

Let me tell you I am done with P&G for pet food.  After I lost a cat shortly before the recalls took place due to kidney failure (can't say it was that since one is fine and the other was old) I will never buy from them again.

I moved over to another brand shortly after P&G bought out IAMS and changed the formula.  But I am a certifiable crazy qat lady, and worry about OPA (other people's animals) even when mine aren't at risk...

That would be me as well!  I had used IAMS for years and years.  I noticed that the fur on my animals didn't look as good after P&G took over.  I had been trying to find a food that my picky eater would like, but had not much luck.

Shortly after the recalls we switched to Innova.  I really liked this brand.  Now we use Kirkland brand after doing some research knowing we needed a slightly less caloric food for our girls (one gained a pound she didn't need) and our vet agreed it was a good one.  I am heartsick over all the issues they have had in general with pet food.  It's like no one cares about the furry ones Sad

I'm using Royal Canin, but really need to find one food to fit all.  My Mainely Coone needs a good hairball formula while Pink needs a lo-cal diet.  Stitch's allergies can flair on some foods, while the QoE needs high protein and (believe it or not), VEGETABLE content - as in leafy greens and such!

There's just no pleasing everyone! and they won't stick to their own bowls - oh, no, that would never do!  Evil

At least they don't call you crazy, saqsay!  My whole team makes jokes about the silly qat pix I use in my signatures in email.  (I really used them as cover when I was the team lead - I had a lot of unhappy news to deliver over the years and was always looking for better ways to appear unthreatening.)  It worked, too.  Grin  Only they still seem to think I should lead our meetings sometimes.  And they call ME crazy! Hah!  Roll Eyes

Oye, I feel your pain with the cats.  We only have 2 at a time so far (can't get DH to agree to more... yet Wink) but even then it can be tough.

I hear you on the Mainely Coons lol.  We have one and a Norwegian Forest Cat.  Have you tried the hairball treats?  I found they worked better for my beloved Cleo (the one who died 2.5 years ago after the first scare) than the foods did.  I found the hairball foods caused some not so good smells in the litter.

Yeah I know what people want to hear.  Cleo had tons of issues with hairballs though in general and we did treat them with the treats.  Some people I know did the vaseline trick, but I never found it to help with that.

The Innova was high protein (for your other issues) but I cannot recall how much leafy greens it had.  I just know it was *quality*  We paid for it too, but it was so worth it to me.

Funny you mention the bowls.  We have two bowls for our two cats.  They'd never dream of not sharing.  I think it is the catly way LOL

Interesting. IAMS and Eukanuba are distributed widely in Europe, but I have seen/heard nothing of this or of the first scare (which I take it happened a couple of years ago?)

Thanks Jean - one more reason to avoid!

Interesting. There's nothing about the brand in the UK, so I don't know if they have the same problem or not. I use royal canin too.

My cat is sick, though. He suddenly losing weight and looking miserable, so he's going to the vet today. If I can catch him. Roll Eyes  They know the difference between being petted and being petted with a view to manhandling them into a cat carrier...

Thanks, Ah2!

The first recall was about four years ago, right after I adopted my little Lucy, mixed breed dog.  Her original owners were feeding her one of the brands that had been recalled.  Fortunately, I had changed her food, and we managed to dodge that bullet.

ETA:  The first recall was in 2007.

Sparkly you are correct about the year and if I remember right the recall was in about April or May of that year.  I lost Cleo in February of that year and there were quite a few people who assume that the food caused the death of their pets months before.  I still am not sure myself since we were rotating foods around a lot at that point.  She had a blocked hairball that caused her to have a gall bladder attack and after that she was never the same.

I wonder if the UK has production of their food in a different place and maybe uses different suppliers?

I love the instructions for the pill.  That was our Persian.  He was horrid at taking pills.  I give up on putting them in carriers now.  We bought harnesses so that we can keep them under control yet don't have to try to shove them into one.  Have 15+ pound cats that are huge doesn't help the fight LOL

LOL!

I am happy to report that no pills are needed. Antibiotics, but they're delivered subcutaneously. The cat doesn't seem to mind that at all, I can do it in a few seconds. A pill would be a much bigger problem, and much as described.

We had a major scare here too with the recall when the China manufacturers put melamine in the food. Thankfuly the food we have always used was not on the list.  I was given a link to this site which I found very eye opening.  http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/

Our Coonies eat Royal Canin, they won't touch Iams.
