Is there only me with short fat fingers and limited space below my knuckle ? It might sound pernickty but I`d love to see the rings on DBL have the width of the band advertised.
I`ve seen it on other sites where they`ve put " this ring has a 2mm, 3 mm , 4 mm band etc " and I suppose if someone`s matching with an existing ring then it may matter. Just a thought.

ROFL!  Okay, Awestruck, I saw the title 'band width' and thought, "Oh no!  Someone's going to be asking a very technical question about the running of the site and WM is on vacation!"  LOL!  This kind of 'band width', I can handle!  Grin

Snooper has the same problem and I know it drives her nuts.  If you are ever concerned about the width of any of our rings, just let me know and I will have an answer for you asap.  No problem!

I don't think Sam owns any wider band rings come to think of it. Sam?  Do you have any wider items at all?   Oooo, I suppose the split shank counts as a wider item.........maybe........ Undecided

I know what you mean Lady. My original engagement ring was a cluster because they were popular back in the 1970`s and on me it resembled a knuckle duster because it seemed to fill the whole of my short fat finger !
I envy you guys who are able to wear the 2ct plus rings. My diamond heart ring is just over a carat and that seems to fill the space.

ROFL Dj I don`t do technical. You`re talking to the person who described David`s music video to a friend by saying he played one of those guitar thingies you lie flat and then slide a metal thingy up and down the wooden bit to get the noise !

I have the same problem.

I love wider, diamond-encrusted bands, but I can't wear many of them-- they're just too wide for my sad, stubby little fingers :-(.  6mm total is about my limit.

Yes, I have size 7 Shreck hands.  My hands are freakishly short and chubby... Even when I was at my thinnest in HS at 120, my ring size was still a 6-6.5 and my fingers were just as chubby Sad

I can wear a WB and ER together, but there's NO WAY a third band will work unless I want really chubby fingers!!!

To give you an idea of how much room I have... If I take my ruler and gently place the end between my ring and middle finger, up to my knuckle (underside) I have 9mm to work with (of course, my fingers wouldn't bend if I used up 9mm).

Snoop your hands are sylph-like compared to mine. My wedding ring finger is size 7.5 and my right hand ring finger is 8.5 and have never ever shrunk no matter how much weight i lose. Perhaps I was destined to be a basket ball player !

Me too! Overall, my fingers aren't too short but there isn't a lot of space between the bottom of my finger and my knuckle. I got a 2mm plain rose gold band to wear with my oval and that takes up almost too much space. I had planned on a rose gold and pink diamond band, but I wouldn't be able to wear the two together. I can't wear my eternity band with my wedding set - not enough finger space.

I need small but interesting rings. Time for something yellow, I think...

Hi all!

I'd say that this is a problem for many people.
Personally, I can't wear a really thick ring.
Measuring about a half dozen rings, I got results between 2 -3.5mm.
The mechanical aspects of our custom made rings are handled by a woman- that's probably one reason ladies seem to find our rings quite comfortable, thankfully..... not too wide, nor too narrow.

Quote
I`d love to see the rings on DBL have the width of the band advertised.
I`ve seen it on other sites where they`ve put " this ring has a 2mm, 3 mm , 4 mm band etc " and I suppose if someone`s matching with an existing ring then it may matter. Just a thought.

Great questions and suggestion Awestruck- if anyone ever asked about the mm width of the shank, we'd answer . It has not been a common request so we've never felt the need to include the width in the description.
Plus, the actual measurement of one section itself is not as important as looking at the actual profile- so we include lots of pics....

More on "Band Width" in general.
There's actually two numbers to be concerned about.
How wide, and how thick.
A wide band that does not have proper thickness is vulnerable to bending-  as much if not more, than an narrow band.

here's a few photos showing how we measure each aspect..
First, let's see how wide this ring is

This ring measures between 2.3-2.4mm

Now let's measure how thick the shank is....

This one is almost 1.6mm thick- which is nice and meaty, without becoming uncomfortable.

Remember, the thickness is crucial on rings with stones set in them- because this is the aspect which makes the ring less prone to bending- when rings bend, stones may loosen.

Those of y'all out there with deformed or bent rings- make sure the stones are still tight.
Tap the ring gently on a hard surface and listen for anything rattling around.

Thanks David. Once again great information and I`m now ready for battle with any local jeweller who may try to pull the wool over my eyes.
I`ve learned so much in recent months and it`s terrific how much time and effort you put into not only making us appreciate the aesthetic side of jewellery but also the technical side of it too. Many thanks from a previously uneducated diamond fan.

Do thicker bands help to prevent the thickened skin on the palms of people who wear rings a lot?

I, too, am one of those people with short, chubby hands.  I have my grandfather to blame for them!

I love the Etoile ring from you know where, but for me to put it with the matching band, I can't get a center stone of more than .50 carat.  I've tried them on, and with the 5 mm ER and then the 4 mm wedding band, that's all my hand can take and still bend!  So, I told my husband I would compromise -- I'll just take a 1 ct center stone with the 7mm band!   Grin hee. hee.

I have a friend who recently got married, and she got a diamond pave' eternity band specially made.  It's almost 9mm wide!  She put a 2mm 18kt band on either side of the band for a stacked look.  She still has lots of room to add more rings!  Grrr...  It's a gorgeous look, though.

Another question I had about band width...  david

I've tried on bands for fun that were 4-5mm and they seem "tighter" than if I had tried on a band that was 2-2.5 mm (both rings same size).  Is this common?

It is Snooper!  Your skin is unable to 'give' or move as easily - it has nowhere to go with the wider bands.  Comfort fit can help but flat bands usually need to be 1/2 size larger........and they're a bugger if they get stuck!  David, feel free to put me right!

I agree with DJ.
It also has to do with the fact people's fingers are generally thicker halfway between the knuckles ( or at the knuckle)  than it is close to the palm.
So, a wider band needs to fit "two parts" of your finger technically.
Where a 2.5mm band requires a gentle push to pass over this spot- the 4mm band would have to fit all day...
