Apparently, the undersea earthquake, which hit at 7:10 pm (Singapore time), struck in the sea some 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of the city of Bengkulu, at a depth of roughly 15 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

Not sure how many people were affected but it's a nasty one. I felt our office building sway for at least a few seconds and it certainly lasted longer than the one that hit Indonesia in March of this year.

Let's pray for them. Ramadan starts tomorrow....

Oh my.  Knowing from personal experience how much damage an earthquake can do, I indeed will praying for all in that region.  That is a big hit!  I hope somehow there was not too much damage done, with it being out at sea.

GL, I'm afraid that 60 miles is NOTHNG as far as distance. This is going to be really bad.  The story is so new, I can't find much about it still. I did read that at least one highrise fell to the ground. I guess, in addition to the devastating loss and damage already sustained, the potential tsunami is everyone's greatest fear.

You are right.  I didn't pay attention to the distance.  How long would it take for tsunami to gather steam?

just to give you a perspective on how big the earthquake is, it's felt from jakarta which is 400 miles away...  that's like saying there's an earthquake in san francisco and people in los angeles feel the tremble...  Shocked

That's awful.  I hope that it's not caused as much damage as we fear.  Having been through a relatively small one (and been a total coward in the process I might add) I can't imagine the force and the terror these huge quakes bring.  Yikes.

Just add this to my prayer list!  Oh I sure hope that it is nothing compared to the last Tsunami.    Utterly devastating.    I hope that people will take heed to the warnings and get to higher land!
