OMG, I went to the Smithsonian and took mucho pics of the Hope diamond - they have it rotating inside the glass case so the amazing sparkles are coming off under the direct lighting - it is AMAZING!  Here's a few of the pics I took.
And here's one of my son and some other kids at the LIVE insect petting zoo...I love the looks on the kids faces.  The boys are delighted, the girl...not so sure.  Meet the Hissing Madagascar African Cockroach, ick!

We might like the roach if he was encrusted with black diamonds.

I forgot about the ROACH BROACH from America's Next Top Model!!!!

It was given to the Smithsonian by Harry Winston.
That was my idea, when I worked there. Evil

I'm sure we can do a little tracing and find out some more if it's history...

Here we go...

http://www.pbs.org/t...nav/main_hopfrm.html

"She wore it swimming; she wore it one time when she was having an operation – a serious operation!" adds columnist Sarah Booth Conroy. "She wore it on a roller coaster; fishing in the icy north; just about every place you can imagine. She was supposed to have put it on her Great Dane; the Great Dane would wear it on his collar. She liked to shock people, you know, she liked to surprise them."

Jewel encrusted roach, ROFL!

This trip was a pre-DBL trip, or you bet I'd have been swinging by a few key locations on the East Coast to visit, EMJ, Snoop, WM... !!!

I used to live in Roanoke, and then Richmond (Midlothian actually, in Brandermill) for a long time.

BR aren't you in Clt?  I was born and was half raised in Hickory and still call that my home base.  I miss the East Coast!  My DB is in Roanoke on business right now and it got me all nostalgic even before this thread.  Oh, those fall drives on the Blue Ridge parkway...gorgeous.

I saw the Hope Diamond when I was about 10 yeas old during my first visit to Washington DC.  I think that it was the only thing I photographed other than landmarks like the White House, Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Funny, the diamond still stands out in my mind today.  I remember being really frustrated that the glass display case was "in the way." I suppose, since I'm not too far away nowadays that I should go and visit again...
