HI Everyone!

I wanted to pass along an experience I had yesterday.
I friend of mine who sells some big stones ( to who, and how, I don' know and don't want to know)

Anyway, he pulls out this 10 carat round and asks me what I think.
I'm looking at a loose diamond- he's holding the paper it came out of, which has a label put there by a non GIA lab. The label has all the pertanent info off the report.

I see it as an I1- not an SI3 by the way, solid I1.

Still, the imperfections are not black, and the appearance to the eye is good.

I'm thinking L color- but I can see right off it's strong blue florescence. Maybe it's a K.

Helping the look is the fact that the make ( cut) is actually very nice.

After I examined the diamond, he showed me the grade issued by the non GIA lab....you ready for this?

If it wasn't bad enough that they called it an I/SI2- they also noted that the diamond had NO fluorescence!

This "cert" came from a lab outside the US- well known for sure.

The diamond would have a price of about $90,000- in fact, probably a fair price today.

How much is a nicely cut I/SI2 ( as graded by GIA) 10 carat worth today?

If it is an eye clean SI2, I'd say between $200 large and a quarter of a mill.

I actually considered buying that sucker- but if we did, I'd throw away the "cert"- no actually, I'm low on bird cage liners...heheheh

The choice for me would have been, GIA or no paper at all.

I think the reason these "certs" exist is sellers lack of faith in the buyer's desire to buy a diamond termed "imperfect" for close to 100K.

Would you pay $90 k for an L/I1 with GIA report? ( we're talking about our little dream worlds here- you've got gazillion$, your husband looks like A-Rod{or IS A-Rod}, you live in a mansion, etc...)

I'd say no too... Assuming A-Rod was my man, and I was a millionaire? I'd probably just ask you David to find me a 10 carat D IF..

With a GIA cert.

And matching earrings.

Yeah, and you really must also have tiny little 5 CT pendants dangling from each of your kitties' collars too, of course, Sam.  GIA D IF for each of those, of course.  Maybe even tasteful ear studs for the kitties too.

Actually, you know what?  Even if cost were no object, I don't think I would want a diamond that huge, is that crazy?  Although I'd never have predicted I'd want the sizes I AM wanting now, so that could always change.  I think the HOLY S$(T ring and ChiChi are my dream rings right now, size wise and otherwise.  In fact, I think I'd take either of those any day over a D IF, I just am loving the fancy colors so much.  A PINK or BLUE would be a a must, of course,in addition.  I think I'd have to have one in each shape too, hmmm.  pear2 radiant heart2 princess It would get bad; I'd probably turn into  Liz Taylor II, with a fancy color focus.

I wouldn't... but not so much because of the color and clarity, and more because of the shape.  If I were in a position to get a 10 ct diamond (or any 90K diamond), I wouldn't want a round.

I wouldn't, but more because of the L color than the I1.  If it was truly eye clean, I think that even with all the cash in the world I would still prefer the lower clarity (come on, most millionaires stay that way because they cut corners somewhere!), but I would definitely be looking in the D-E-F range!!  And at that price I would only buy it with the GIA report.

Unfortunately, never gonna be my issue!

Funny story as a side note....My Mom had an OLDER friend who has a 10 ct. solitare ring that she keeps in a shoe box when she is not wearing it. They were laughing about it and my Mom jokingly told her that if "God forbid" something happened she would walk up to the front door and kindly offer her family top dollar for all her old shoes!  My Mom is all heart, right?

OMG!  That one would be a little tougher to pull off...hmmmmmm....  Howdy neighbor, I'm having a little trouble that my doughnut pillow just isn't taking care of, mind if I borrow your Prep H?  Just don't think that would cut it.

ETA:  GOOD LORD, 20 carat EC tennis bracelet!??!  Does it fill up the entire box?

Yes, while the stars all sport their boulders, I do notice a few (like you said, Posh) sport a warmer diamond...

I just watched a show on diamonds on the history channel and they showed the EGL (which I thought was weird.) I learned something new though.  I thought the DeBeers family owned the DeBeers company, but apparently they sold the land and the man who started DeBeers borrowed their name.

David, that is EXACTLY MY DREAM WORLD!!  Funny, in my "A-Rod as husband" dream world, diamonds don't really enter the bedroom picture!
