for me, this type of thing is so very heinous.
I used to go crazy letter writing and so on. It's the right thing to do.
I am very touched by the fact you guys have done just that.

After having this happen so many times, I really try to be more philosophical about it.
When someone steals something, there will never be any true happiness or profit in it for them.
So, in essence, they are already suffering their own punishment.

Yea yea, and daisies are going to come flying out my butt.

No- seriously- I think we need to take steps to alert eBay and the bad seller whenever this happens.
IN fact, eBay relies heavily on users to police the site.
Just saying- "This guy stole my photos" is not going to do it.......

To prove this offense, we'd need to find the photos this guy stole on our site ( actually, in a prior eBay auction of ours) and provide eBay with the specifics.

Let's go back to the "Zen: way of thinking about it.......

When you think about it, you realize that eBay, as a company, can't just go on what someone says.
I could easily say " Look, I've got over 1500 photos posted on eBay RIGHT NOW. Taken in context, it's very easy to see that this sellers photos don't match, and mine do."

But think of eBay like a court of law. They need to be able to show actual proof.
That means I'd have to go thru over 35,000 of MY photos to find the ones which were stolen.

Of course, intelligent buyers don't need the same level of proof to recognize a bad seller.

Still, it's a shame that anyone would send any money at all based on a stolen photo.....

...I suggest we all go through the "ask seller a question" link on the ebay page? that way, the challenge and the response are visible to everyone who looks at the item page.
Jen

I believe the seller has the option of displaying a question or not... If memory serves right as a year ago I sold something.  And I displayed some of the comments, but not all...

I asked "This picture of the alleged stone for sale looks very familiar from my jeweler, DBL" and got no response of course..

Sadly it doesn`t just apply to ebay sellers David. I bought 1ct tdw of asscher earrings from a jewellery site. The website photgraphs looked lovely, the earrings were atrocious. I always say the truth will out, whether it be on ebay or anywhere else. After my one bad experience I now rely on reading genuine customer testimonials and the beauty of your site is the forum allows prospective customers to see in real time how satisfied your customers are. Any site can forge a few good testimonials, only your site shows your customers saying it in the here and now.

David, your point about these people eventually suffering the consequences of their own actions is well taken. Really, it's just like the legal system not being able to keep up... ebay has gotten so big, so fast, that there is no viable way to police it. I suppose, you could spray paint all your tweezers gold, or maybe hot pink, then they'd be instantly recognizable in your photos! OR, we could all actually purchase items from these unscrupulous sellers and THEN leave negative feedback on ebay (huh, THAT seems to defeat the purpose!)... I mean really, that's about all one can do.  dontknow

I might be gullable to think this way....but the more of us that wrote the seller.......maybe, just maybe the seller will realize, hey, they are onto me!

And maybe, juuuuust maybe they will develop a conscience and do what they need to do to DESERVE the 100% feedback rating.

Hi,
Here's the story of the 3.5 carat emerald cut.  I was looking around for an "EC" and saw this one over and over again on ebay.  It was funny because no one was looking at it.  It had like 40 people to view it, and I think half of the viewing came from me looking at it.  I called the lady who was selling it about 10 times asking her plenty of questions.  I noticed that she had an appraisal from Richard Sherwood, who I had seen from one of the diamond blog sites.  I wrote him about the diamond and he said it was a "no apologies" stone...meaning you could go anywhere with it and make no apologies for it.   He also sent me the following pictures.

I made a crazy offer and she accepted it.  She said that it was less than she wanted, but she wanted me to have it.  I am taking my time looking for a setting.  If any of you see anything you think would look good for it, I am taking suggestions.  I cannot be happier with it.  I had a doctor offer me $10000 more than I paid for it, but my jeweler friend said he was not convinced that I could duplicate the deal in the future!!! Crazy isn't it?

and another picture...

Oh, one more thing...I like the setting it is in, but my jeweler friend said it was from about 1910 and was shot.

OH WOW!! I love your ring! To be honest, I quite like the setting, and while it may be a bit worn (shank?) I'd almost have a jeweler remake the setting! WOW!!!

It sure is a no apologies stone...........and setting for that matter!   I can't see anything wrong with the setting that it would need fixed.   If you do decide to have another setting made, I would duplicate the old setting.  It is just perfect for that stone and I love the art deco appeal!!     So glad you got a wonderful deal on it too!    JUST GORGEOUS! gogirl5 DropGob th_AWA123112

3.49

(1) EMERALD CUT   9.84 X 7.86 X 5.08 MM

COLOR: J

CLARITY:  VS2

FLOURESCENCE- (BLUE)- MEDIUM

CUT CLASS (AGA):  2A

DEPTH:  64.6%

TABLE:  68.4%

CROWN/PAVILLION:  10.7% AVERAGE CROWN HEIGHT  52% AVERAGE PAVILLION DEPTH

LENGHT TO WIDTH RATIO:  1.25 - 1.00 RATIO

Thank you so much for your kind words.  I loved the setting as well but the jeweler bent back the prongs with his fingernails and the stone popped out.  It also has some cracked baguettes.   I have seen this setting at elsewhere so it can be redone.  You don't think it should be a three stone?

GIAGirl, that ring is magnificent and I agree that if possible, you should stick to the same setting...it's just perfect for the EC.

Enjoy your ring!

How long have you been in your home? I don't have a ton of equity yet...but then again, the payments include the taxes and insurance...

I have been there 6 years.

Hey, how about THIS STORY???  My mom is a teacher and she loves diamonds as much as everyone here, so she knows all the good rings in our town and who owns them and how they got them...so on and so forth.  SOOOO, she was telling me that when I moved in my house that the lady who lived next door to me had a 2.5 carat EC with tapered baguettes and then a 20 carat EC tennis bracelet...that is right I said it....20 carat EC tennis bracelet!!!  People, it does not get much better than that!!!  WELL, here is the dramatic story on all of the above...

She is about 48 now...so about 44 years ago her mom just woke up one morning and decided she did not want to be a mom anymore....so she left the fam and went to NCY and married some rich dude.  She never had any contact with the family or her daughters because she said she did not want anything to do with them.  SOOOO, finally after many many years she contacted the daughters and said that she wanted to see them because she was on her death bed.  My neighbor is so happy that her mom has contacted her, so she flies to NY and on her death bed her mom looks up and says "I bet you are only here for my jewelry."  (Way to ruin a moment, huh?) My neighbor did not even know about the jewelry, but sure enough there it was...and she inherited it.  There was supposedly more...well you can imagine that there are not the most loving memories around the jewels...but then again they are some nice jewels!!!  The funny part to this story is that she keeps it all in a Preparation H box in her medicine cabinet!  My mom always jokes that she may knock on the door and complain about hemorrhoids!!!  HA!   Evil

Thought this was interesting... starting bid for this platinum ring is $31,000 and the seller says "you will never see another ring like this anywhere, ever. Estate natural fancy dark orangy brown Asscher cut 2.14ct diamond. That's right orangy – very, very rare. Very well cut. SI clarity. Certified. The real deal. Circa 1920. Side diamonds also from an estate – nice square emerald cuts." (EGL cert. The sides are about 1.50cts H-I, VS).
