Hello LG!  So fantastic to have you here on the forum!  I don't think we have a final fate - I think it will take as long as it takes!  What I wouldn't give to be able to sit on that cutter's shoulder though...............not that that would be very comfortable for the poor man, but still............ David, I have a question. The line you drew on the octahedron (sp??? eek!) are you saying the cutter would have the diamond sewn above that line, or below it?

Thanks!

OH , I see never mind      the diamond will be on the wheel as one piece oops!!!!

Hey Snoop- We are at least two weeks away from the end of the contest...

More on the cutter's world.....

Legend

1-That's the actual "wheel". It looks more like a turntable- the type that a DJ uses. The diamond is attached to the arm, and the cutter actually grinds the diamond on that flat wheel. The wheel is seasoned with olive oil and diamond dust- the oil causes the diamond dust to stick to the wheel. It's only this microscopic film that prevents the diamond from cutting the wheel, instead of the other way around.
2) The arm which #3 and 4 are attached to. The flat portion allows the cutter to press down quite hard
3) although this looks quite rough, it's a remarkable precision instrument The top of this part, called a "dop" has a level so the cutter can cut to extremely precise angles.

4) This is the part that actually holds the diamond.

5) Cell phone- this guy actually talks to 20 different people while he's cutting!
6) keys to the minuscule closet sized space called a "factory"
7)The Loupe cutters use. Quite different from the type dealers like me use.
Cool pieces of "bort"- industrial quality diamonds used to warm up the wheel. Even though the wheel is "dressed" with oil and diamond dust, you don't simply throw on a piece of gem quality diamond without first getting the wheel up to temperature.
9) Ever present coffee ( and matches for ever present cigarettes)
10) the master cutter's arm!
11) other diamonds waiting to be worked on.

I screwd up by not posting the color in my post. I think it's going to be a light yellow. Do I need to post the exact letter too? I would guess OP maybe?
