Hello Everybody!

I'm new here and thought I would ask some questions to some knowledgeable people here.

I’m new at buying colored diamonds and I can say it is very difficult to find a reliable source. I have not even seen any colored diamonds personally to say the least.

Everywhere I go and ask the trail ends up cold for fancy colored diamonds. The only places that seem to have any knowledge or resources are the online stores. Don’t know if I should play that route since I believe I should look at the product first hand. Don’t really trust them that much.

To get to the point, is there a store in the Los Angeles area to personally buy colored diamonds? I prefer not going to a place where you’re just paying for the real estate because the prices will be INSANE. Are there any Mom and Pop shop?

Thanks for your help.

Bryan

Hi Bryan,
Welcome to ColoredDiamond.info!

YOUR questions are very good ones.
The problems finding Fancy Colored diamonds in jewelry stores are widespread.
The reason?

It's a limited market, so it's not cost effective for a local store to invest in a lot of these diamonds.
When I say limited: Say 100 people in the US are looking for a diamond of one carat or more.
How many are looking for a Fancy Color?

10?

Then, the variety is so great, what should the store carry?
Fancy Light Yellow is similar to J in terms of pricing.
Fancy Vivid Yellow can be double the price of D.

The bottom line is that one must satisfy two main groups to be successful in the running of a Fancy colored diamond business:
a) THE CUTTERS- in fact, it's just as important to keep the cutters happy as it is to keep the clients ( buyers) happy.
That means: The cutter needs to sell ALL the colors because the only way to buy effectively in the rough, is to buy all the colors. In our case that works well as we have people who love the lighter, as well as the darker colors.

b) THE BUYERS- here's what would seem to be critical to retail buyers:
*Accurate info
*Thorough representation ( for example- multiple photos)
* Wide Selection
* Well cut diamonds with no "problems"
* Service before and after sale
* Quality Jewelry or metal work

In terms of physical reality, the internet allows any given seller to show many more people their wares.
Again, the reality is that the finest stores in the best locations- Fifth Avenue, Rodeo Drive- can attract a high enough concentration of buyers to stock more Fancy Colored Diamonds.
Any idea of Rodeo Drive rents? Much less the cost of "the little blue box"?

SO- the best stores will have what you're looking for, and if a store is what you need, you'll have to pay for the privilege.

Darn... I was hoping someone knew of a wholesale outlet that carried colorless and colored.

Thanks!

Hi Bryan,
Why don't you "buy" five different rings from David, pretend you have a store of your own at home, take your time, and if you don't like them, just send them back. No question asked.
He do carry soooo nice rings. I have 3 rings with yellow diamonds I have bought from him.
Good luck whatever you decide.  Cheesy

Hey Bryan,
The concept is exactly perfect for ..say Brand New Rolex watches.
If there was an "outlet" that sold the same Submariner as a fine store, you would know what you're getting.
I don't believe there is such a place for Rolex.

With diamonds, the goal is to buy a fine notable diamond. It's a type of product that does not cost less if you wanted to buy them in bulk.
Commercial diamonds ,yes. Fine diamonds, especially Natural Fancy Colored ones can actually be MORE expensive if one needs to buy a large quantity.

Hi Bryan!  I live in LA also, and I can say that I looked long and hard to find a fancy yellow stone here in town, but I did not find a mom & pop shop that carried any that impressed me & I just was not going to pay for the Rodeo guys.   That took me to ebay and oh-so-many shysters.  Finally, I found DBL, and I can tell you I have no more need for an LA shop for these kinds of purchases (small stuff & unique finds sure).  The pictures are fabulous (have you seen the movies??) and they are honest and fun to work with.  Their return policy is great (Lord knows I have used it enough - sorry!) and you can also trade up later.

What are you looking for?  Are you getting engaged?  Anniversary/bday gift?  We like details and love stories here!!

That gives me another idea. Maybe one should buy colored diamonds from a relaible source as a small business locally. You can go to New York at a wholesale outlet but not in Los Angeles. There probable is a need for service and sell these items to local people and push advertisement thru radio.

I think once someone starts to advertise heavly about colored diamonds then everybody and their Mom wants colored diamonds. When I first started shopping for diamonds I did not have the satisfaction of buying a colorless diamond. It was just a number game and the rarity of it became exctinct to me. So I wanted something more and thats when I discovered colored diamonds because they are alot more interesting and incredibly rarer than coloreless. Once people realize that colored "fancy" diamonds arent that much more than a colorless, people will want to buy. I can choose to buy a very rare good fancy $4000 colored pink diamond or a not so rare, "everybody has" white coloreless diamond. I think I go for the colored. People have very great misconceptions of colored diamonds. Colored diamonds are affordable and yes some are very, very expensive because they are truly one of a kind.

It’s for an engagement ring.

I want to give her something very special even if it is a small stone. Something that took a miracle to happen, much like our love happen. The stone doesn’t have to cost that much, I just want to give her an expression of uniqueness – like how she is. I think it says a lot about how much she means to me that I went that extra mile to give her something that is not horrendously expensive but truly did some looking and planning to give her something unique. It’s not how much you spent but the time and beauty it came out. I can say that I searched the area high and low and that it is hard to find such a diamond, same reason how it hard to find a compatible woman.

I know she will be showing it to her friends (if I got her a colorless diamond) and some people will be making comparisons with there diamonds. The only little comparison would be if it was a bigger carat on a round or princess cut with a platinum or white gold band. I thought anybody can go to a jewelry store and drop $5 to $10 k in one evening. What’s the hard work in that other than being frugal and the dealer telling you that the special cut with the hearts and darts are a great investment?

I just want to find a 20 point, fancy pink, vs1, GIA cert diamond.

That is really sweet. And funny you should say that about colored diamonds being as unique as the person wearing it, that is my feeling about colored diamonds. I love that they are not what everyone else has.

Put a pink in a microsetting and it looks larger and the pink pops due to the white pave frame contrast, too. A colored diamond, particularly a pink, really doesn't have to be large to be impressive.

Welcome Bryan!!!

You've definitely come to the right place if you're looking for a colored diamond.

I am a DBL (Diamonds by Lauren aka Rock Diamond) customer & have purchased 2 rings from them. I am 110% satisfied with the diamonds & settings on both rings.

I can tell you that David & Marc at DBL hand pick each stone so you'll be getting a great cut diamond. And their factory does a wonderful job with each setting. Everything they make is heavy & durable....made to last more than one lifetime! Also, DBL does not have a brick & mortar type store. They work out of a small office in NYC. That means you'll get a fantastic price----especially compared to all the other B&M stores out there.

I know you're probably nervous buying something "online", but with DBL you need NOT be. They are very honest & provide pictures & detailed descriptions of every diamond they stock. If it makes you feel more comfortable, buy a diamond with a GIA report. GIA is not affiliated with any jeweler and they provide the most detailed and the most accurate information of any diamond grading company.

And if for some reason you're not happy with the diamond once it arrives, DBL offers a great return policy. David & Marc will bend over backwards to make sure you're satisfied!

You just can't go wrong with a DBL diamond!!!!

Good luck & please share pics of what you decide to buy............We are jewelry FREAKS & love pictures!!!

Bryan,

I thought you might like to see my DBL rings.

#1 2.00 Carat N Color Heart, SI2 Clarity (with GIA report)

N color means it's very light yellow, but it usually appears more white than yellow (it's set in platinum which helps). SI2 refers to the amount of inclusions it has. It has a few small inclusions, but it is eye-clean. You have to be careful with clarity issues, especially with certain diamonds like emeralds & asschers. Inclusions are more visible in those types of diamonds.

#2 0.85 Carat Fancy Brownish Purple-Pink Cleavage-less Heart,
             I2 Clarity (with GIA report)

This one usually appears light purple, but sometimes it takes on a brownish or slight pinkish tint. I2 refers to the amount of inclusions it has. It has a few carbon spots and a feather, but they're all off to the left hand side. They are visible to the naked eye, but not when the ring is at arm's length. I'm sure the darker color of the diamond helps mask the inclusions more also. Any diamond with an I1, I2, or I3 (and even a few SI's) clarity grade will have inclusions visible to the naked eye.

Bryan, here are some of the natural pink diamonds available on the DBL site. I am also posting a colorless asscher & colorless emerald because they have pink diamond halos.

DBL can also do custom work if you have something else in mind.

Good luck!

Smiley Amy

P.S. BTW I do NOT work for DBL......I'm just a very happy customer. Smiley

We have a .35ct pink purple diamond. I would love to put that one in a microsetting for myself. I guess I can't have all the diamonds for myself.
