What Is the Difference between Brownish Orange and Orangey Brown?

Hi everyone!  This is a very interesting distinction.  Like so many other things in the diamond world, a slight difference in appearance, means a huge difference in value.
For example: we have been carrying some beautiful brown diamonds that have an orange tint, like this guy:

.63cts for $829

Well, today, we looked at a parcel of a assorted diamonds, an assortment of shapes and sizes with very strong colors in it.  We selected a few that have very strong orange color.  Now, orange is one of the most expensive colors in diamonds, while brown is one of the least expensive colors.
This makes for some interesting dichotomies-, because a slight orangey tint can make a diamond worth a lot more than another one that has a brown overtone.
Let's look at a few that we picked up today:

ITEM #: R2585
Heart Shape- ( No Cleavage) Diamond, Loose

  WEIGHT: 0.50ct
SHAPE: Heart Shape- ( No Cleavage)
  COLOR: Fancy Vivid Brown Orange
  CLARITY: SI1
  MEASUREMENTS: 5.78 x 5.00 x 2.70 mm
  TOTAL DEPTH: 54.0%
  FLUORESCENCE: NONE

Price: $2195

As you can see, this diamond has orange as its predominant color- which is why the price is about three times of the diamond with Brown as the predominant color

WOW - very interesting David!  Personally,  I prefer the "brown" to the "orange!"  I guess being blonde - I have NEVER liked or been able to "wear" orange sooooo it translates to my taste is "diamonds!"   Grin

Hi guys!
Elizabeth, that's lucky: beer taste, for Champagne diamonds...hehehe

Mikla, here's a pair of pear shaped diamonds that kind of matches... they total .46 carats

What do you mean when you say that they "kind of match"?

They would be so fabulous as side stones . . . my head is spinning!

The shapes are slightly different.  One has a kind of flat top ( more like a cleavage-less heart), with the other one having a rounded the top-like a traditional pear shape.

Thing is... if you set them with the points facing downward as side stones on a three stone ring, that part of the stone really be so obvious to see anyway, so they might make a nice pair

I am sooo confused by the naming of the shapes!  The first one labeled a heart without cleavage looks like a pear to me, and the second one labeled a shield looks like a heart without cleavage to me.

David, is this just up to the grader or cutter, or how else is the labeling of shapes determined?

Lovely diamonds all!  I think the first two would be great halo set in pendants, and if the pair really looks good together, would be gorgeous sides!!

Yup, two pendants and a pair... LOVE the colors.  Although, I can see an interesting halo ring with the .50ct. Hummm, the more I think about it... Imagine it in a setting like WM's yellow halo.  Yummmmmmmmm.

I love that setting. I also like the orange brown diamonds a lot.

Here is our chart. I need to add new diamonds to this chart!
