Here's a thought--- I may be off base, but at least this will open it up for converstaion, if nothing else.
When I was looking for a replacement ER for DW (before I purchased on-line) I went into a B&M store to check out the inventory. This one particular well known store (which will remain nameless) had diamonds they showed me that had huge inclusions and carbon spots in the middle of the stones. They were the ugliest things I'd ever seen. I obviously walked away from that store. Here's the thing...everytime I drive by that store I think--"what junk!!" It doesn't matter if they carry the Hope Diamond--I would never buy anything from them.
So my question is this...does inventory set the standards or do the standards set the inventory?

That is not off base at all djm!

You bring up a very good point.  One that I have considered extensively.  Here's where I think the Internet, and our type of business can really offer more to the consumer.

A brick-and-mortar store is basically handcuffed with their market segment.  The unnamed store that you went into is probably known in your neighborhood, as a place for cheap diamonds.

Shoppers of higher quality diamonds, probably never even walk in there.
Unfortunately, many sellers of "promotional diamonds" are using less than transparent means to represent what they sell.
This would include the use of non-GIA reports for example.

Conversely, shoppers in your area that ARE looking for less expensive diamonds, probably won't feel comfortable in the high-end stores in your town.
That's what I'm talking about when I say "handcuffed"

When I was developing DBL, I realized that we might be able to cater to both ends of the market.  AND do it in such a way that would offer transparency, and honesty to the shoppers.
For example, I don't know anyone who makes as big a fuss about a diamond filled with poo as I do.
Therefore, someone shopping for a diamond with a spot, will be made acutely aware of the fact that they will likely see the spot.

I believe that this makes everyone more comfortable.
That would include the buyers of high-end diamonds, because they can see the differences on our site.  And hopefully buyers of more promotional diamonds, would appreciate our honesty.
Of course, you know the old saying about there being a sucker born every minute... everyday people are buying misgraded diamonds believing that they are higher quality than they actually are.

Hopefully me, and my big mouth, and you guys, and your big mouths will help to alleviate the situation, day by day.

Man, do I have to do everything around here?

Later on,   the owner of the store was rather mad at the salesgirl for selling that diamond...........      Embarrassed

So Ronda why do you suppose the owner was mad?

I understand what you all are saying--I'm just playing devil's advocate here. And BTW--I am not saying that David is trying to pawn this off as something it is not--I KNOW David is an honest businessman.

It's like this...if I do surgery on someone, it doesn't matter how well I do on the inside if I do a terrible job suturing, it scars or if the bandage is  sloppy. People are going to judge me on what they see. My nurses all know what kind of surgeon I am -- just like we all know what kind of businessman David is. But I would NEVER have anything leave my office that wasn't 100% perfect looking. That's my calling card.
I agree that it may not matter to some people ("one man's junk is another man's treasure"). Some patient's don't care what it looks like as long as they feel better. True--but it may "say something" completely different to someone else. I'm thinking the owner was mad because the "comparison diamond" was out there representing his store.

I agree with the arguments made on both sides.  I'd like to point out though that if this diamond were so ugly (like the rough one discussed), we wouldn't be having this discussion at all.  David would never have looked twice at it.  Clearly it has some good points - like a nice color and size.  If my DH gave this to me when we were in our early 20's and cash strapped, I would have loved it.  It is a hell of a lot better than a number of diamonds I've seen advertised as "canary diamonds" (don't get me started on that rant).  I think a good jeweler caters to a varied clientele.  Obviously David has ultra high end goods too and anyone visiting his site would see that.  I don't think anyone would be left with the impression he only sells low quality or cheap goods. Plus he has accurately stated what it is so any purchaser knows exactly what they are getting.  My 2 cents - if someone has a limited budget, likes the size and color of this one and doesn't mind the inclusions, enjoy it.  Who cares what other people think because how many of them actually have a 2.5ct fancy yellow diamond?

Exactly...his reputation was at stake!

However,  we know that David is the "master" of his domaine. He would never sell a diamond that looked like an uncut rock or frozen spit.
I have a good feeling that the above diamond has alot of charm to it even if there is a little carbon in the middle.    I would really like to see a video before we sweep it..

One of the reasons that David is my main jeweler is because I get the best of both worlds.   Stunningly gorgeous diamonds, that cater to my budget.   I have gone into "upscale" jewelery stores and have seen worse looking diamonds than the one above for 3 times the price.     This goes back to what all of us have been saying all along...........  David really knows how to pick them!!
Also, knowledge is power.... too many people get caught up in the D, IF or VVs diamond are all I will buy.
These are the same people  that have a very small budget........if only they knew they where selling themselves short...

DJM,  If I was having surgery done........I am going to YOU!  I do think that is very important when it comes to my health.   I wouldn't want anything compromised.    I can ,however, "compromise" when it comes to diamonds!!!    Smiley
