Is it important that sidestones for a yellow diamond be really bright white (D-E-F)?

I ask this for the following reason.  When I told my FIL I'd bought my ear studs from CH, he e-mailed me back, "Oh, I guess I need to find another recipient for [my deceased MIL's] studs."  I e-mailed back-- "Nooooooooooo!!!!"  Cheesy

So... I have been having my little obsessive fantasies about what I'd do with these .91 ct H SI1 oval studs, IF they were mine, which of course they are NOT.  Yet.   Cheesy

But... if they ever WERE mine, and they were a close enough match to one another, I'd love an oval three-stone ring.  I see three possibilities: white diamond (such as that 1.14 ct oval on the new list), blue or pink ( love10) sapphire, or yellow diamond.  (Well, that's sort of four possibilities)

BUT...

This got me thinking.

If I were going for a lighter yellow, maybe up to Fancy Yellow, maybe as light as Y-Z, would H color side stones be a bad idea?  They'd obviously look great with an  G-H-I-maybe J white diamond.  Great with a sapphire.  But what about a yellow?  Is it necessary to go with D-E-F to get enough contrast?

Ohhh hey Robin (i'm going to be the first one to respond...which hasn't happened in ages!!)

I personally think the warmer ones will be lovely...i'm sure it's not a rule to have icy ones with light yellow.......and really, H isn't THAT warm.....

Maybe we need to see pictures of those ovals.... Evil

i think it's hard to say judging on colors alone...  each stone has its own personality...  and fluorescense plays a factor as well...  usually it's best to have all 3 stones side by side in a layout to see if they match perfectly...  i'm sure david will chime in...

Good question, Robin - I'll make sure David sees this.   Smiley

Oh, hey, thanks for posting this!  I didn't look at this ring-- I looked at several of the three-stone rings that were yellow centers, and it seemed as if they all had D-E-F sides, but this is one that is much MORE tinted than an H would be (assuming it's even close to an accurate appraisal)!  And, clearly, it looks great!

I really like the yellow side stones with it! They make the yellow in the main stone much more visible. I think the yellow or some really, really white side stones would look good. But if I had to chose I would say.....YELLOW!!!

Hi Everyone!
Ace hit the nail on the head- you need to put the diamonds next to each other to see how they look.
As a general rule, the lighter yellow the center, the higher white the sides need to be.
For example: A Fancy intense can look quite yellow next to a J, while a U-V probably would not....still the stones need to be looked at to see how they look!

For what it's worth, Robin, when I was setting my cognac (an Argyle stone) I used some H colored ovals set in white gold prongs.  The ovals were earrings before.  This is a high contrast ring.  I am with David, though.  I laid them out with each other for a long time to see if I liked the way they looked.  I just lucked out that they matched.  I hope you get the stones!  I have stuff in my safe that is still waiting for the right "opportunity" to come along.

FYI, Robin, my ChiChi diamond is a fancy brownish-yellow, and it is set with H color aaschers.  They look quite bright white...
