DJM, I often have similar impulses.  I mean, on the one hand, I want our local businesses to flourish.  OTOH, I don't want people to overpay!

When my DH and I got engaged, he was making $11 an hour.  He knew that I would really appreciate a substantial ER, so he got credit from the jeweler's to pay for part of my ring.  (It's the same ring I wear today-- .96 radiant with trill sides.)  It's the only debt other than our mortgage that he's ever had-- that's how important it was to him to make me happy.  <sigh>

I know it was a stressful purchase for him, and I think that's true of many young men.  Nowadays, of course, knowledge is much more available via the internet, and perhaps that helps.

Still, I think that finding DBL and this forum would be a stress-reducer for MANY young men buying an ER, don't you?

This is a true story from many years ago. I was very heavily pregnant with my oldest son and had arranged to meet my DH in town and outside a jewellers ( where else lol ? ) when I noticed a young man moving from window to window and back again.
I was transfixed watching him and after what seemed like an eternity he said " excuse me, I hope you don`t mind but I`m looking for an engagement ring and I haven`t a clue what to buy ! ".
Of course I asked him what kind of ring his girlfriend liked ..... he didn`t know.
Then I asked him what size of finger she had ..... he didn`t know.
Then I said well why don`t you bring her and let her choose her own ?
Oh no he said, it`s Valentine Day TOMORROW and I need a ring asap so please will you help me to choose ?
In the end I picked out a few possibilities from the window and to this day, 33 years later, I often wonder if there`s a woman out there somewhere, wearing a ring I chose and which she either loves or hates.

Diamonds are like people, put them under a microscope and you`ll always see a flaw but hold them up to the Sun and each and every one is beautiful.

awestruck, that reminds me of when i worked at xyz jewelers.... sometimes young guys would come in to buy gifts for their wives or girlfriends, and wanted to buy several $99.00 items. i always tried to steer them to one say, $400.00 or more  item..... a lot of the time they would buy several "crap" items anyway, figuring, no doubt, that quantity is better than quality...... i never understood that. i had to break several of my boyfriends from that bad habit. to this day i have a scrap gold bag containing many of these disposable jewelry pieces.  Undecided

boy, took about getting off topic....lol   Grin
