Does anyone have any info on red diamonds?  I mean other than they are super rare and expensive.  I've read on some sites that red is rare and increases price as a secondary color in pink diamonds but on one other site I read that red can actually decrease the price of a pink because it has a muted effect on color.  Anyone have any info on how a red secondary hue can impact the price of a diamond?  I always thought a red increases the value of all diamonds (i.e. reddish brown) but I've seen conflicting articles on how it impacts a primary pink diamond.  Anyone with a view or info?

HI Zoey,
Far as I know, Red is the most expensive color in diamonds.

Secondary hues are quite complicated. Some make the diamond more desitrable ( expensive) others less so.....

What is it that makes the difference?  Is it just how it impacts the overall look of the stone (i.e. if it makes it more intense looking like a greenish yellow rather than toning it down like a brownish pink)?  I figure you will tell me it all depends on the stone which makes sense but I always thought any red in a stone would hike the price.

I was trying to recall if I'd ever seen the word "Reddish" on a GIA report....
I might imagine that a brown stone might have some reddish tint to it- but that would not necessarily make it valuable....al brown has a red element.....

If it was a reddish yellow?Huh? no I can't see that.

Maybe there exists a reddish pink, or pinkish red diamond?Huh?
We're talking millions here.......

David, my world records book is ancient, and this could have been surpased a long time ago...but wasn't the record price ever brought at auction for a diamond a red diamond? (I know it was as of 1984 LOL)

I saw a red diamond at the Smithsonian in Washington this weekend. Pure deep red but it did not have a GIA designated color. I would not call it pretty.

I wonder who bought the Hancock red, also if they would wear it.  The insurance company wouldn´t be very pleased if it was worn I suppose.   I should imagine that most people would think it was an extra bright ruby.  It depends who is wearing it though.  When I saw a  woman in the supermarket with  enormous studs and pointed them out to my husband he said they must be fakes.  Then when we left and he saw the car the lady got into he changed his mind.
