David,
When a stone like this comes to the GIA...what tips them off that it may or may not be a chameleon.

In other words, could this stone go back and get identified as a chameleon or is it cut and dry with spectometry?

Don't worry. David can read through typos no problem.

Proof? Just look here and search for "rain"

(not an answer to your question, but funny typo nevertheless)

Oh, and the answer to your question seems to be "cut and dried with spectroscopy". See here and here

Did your typo get corrected or did I just read through it as well?  Crazy how the brain works or doesn't work...however you choose to see it.

Thank you for the articles OMC...good to know...I think that answers my question...true chameleons can be visible through spectroscpy.  Then some diamonds change colors due to the ultra violet light stimulation of their green or yellow luminescence.  COOL!

Nope, it's still there.  I had to read through it like three or four times before I found it.

Which would imply that most customers are rainmakers. Alas, not (at least not in my case)

Thank you for providing such excellent info OMC!

I would not have been able to answer that particular question GIAgirl- I don't believe it is part of a GG's education, although CityGirl can confirm than one.

Thank you too for the prooof reading skill.
My dictation program, which is a real time saver- but occasionally, it, and I, miss a word which is misquoted.
The damn thing never makes a spelling mistakes, but sometimes misquotes words.

When I don't catch these errors, it can make for some funny, or horribly wrong results.....

Thank you , you old (married) coyote

Well, David, what tips you off to send a particular stone, thinking it is a chameleon?  My thought is that some of them slip in places without people noticing.

David's right,  we didn't go into very much detail about chameleon diamonds in the GIA class.  I don't even want to venture a guess because I really don't know much about them!!  GIAgirl you mentioned flourescence and spectroscopy... I do believe those 2 test might be the ones that tip off the lab that the diamond could be a chameleon.  I'll try to find out some more info!

ok, some more info has been obtained  Smiley

We have an "insider" at GIA who was able to clear up this issue for us all.  Turns out, chameleon stones will have a certain body color/fluorescence/spectrum combination that tips off the lab that it might be a chameleon.  Then more direct tests are performed to confirm the suspicion. They will do these confirmation tests anytime they feel a chameleon is a possibility and without any prompting from the owner/submitter.

So there ya have it, if anyone has any more questions please let us know.  Like I said, we do have a contact at the GIA who can provide information which may be beyond my meager and David's quite extensive knowledge!

You've sailed right past any knowledge I might have. Thanks Cori. I think you're a big asset with connections no less.

Thanks.  That is good to know.  I mean that little green radiant that David has was a find...If I got the diamond above I would say "You are still a chameleon to me, diamond."   I really would.
