Hello everyone,  I'm looking for some advice from some colored diamond veterans out there.  I recently purchased an uncerted loose diamond which is small and inexpensive but has a really great color.  It was sold to me as orange but when I sent it to IGI (no GIA in my area) it came back as orange red.  I don't think they got it right because I can't see anyone selling an orange red as an orange (although I can see both colors in it).  But my question is: do I send it away to GIA to satisfy my curiosity or do I take my husband's advice and "set it and forget it"?  Is it really worth the extra money to get a GIA cert if I am just going to keep it?  Thoughts anyone?

I made a tiny edit in the subject line. You wrote certs. They are reports so I just changed it. David is a stickler about this but not in a bad way. He'd not throw you in a pit of cobras or anything.  I also think David will want to answer this one personally, so I will flag it.

In the mean time, we do have a tutorial Colored Diamond Reports.

OK Thanks.  I just used "cert" because it was shorter to type and I didn't appreciate the significance.  No offense meant.

Hey Zoey don`t worry about it. I wouldn`t know a cert from my elbow !
To be honest if you like the stone and you know how you want it set, then I`d just go for it. At the end of the day you wear the ring not it`s certificate or whatever.
Just my own thoughts. Enjoy it !

Hi Zoey,
Welcome- as far as the word "cert"....join the club.
So many people use the word, nothing at all to feel bad about.

I'd agree with your husband.
It's likely that if the diamond warranted sending to GIA, the seller would have done that.
How large is it? ( what's the carat weight?)

It is 0.53cts and it is a fat little pear.  Not much to speak of in size or cut but the color is what sold me.  I don't really have an eye for figuring out modifying colors if it is not really obvious.  Anyway, you are probably right that it isn't worth the additional cost for a GIA report but it sure would be nice to know.  Oh well, I guess I'll just save the extra money and put it to my next acquisition.  Thanks.

Cool!

It's important to note that red  is the rarest of colors in diamonds- but that's pure red.
There's tons of browns that have reddish undertones......but the brown would make the value quite low.

Sorry about the duplicates.  Never done this before and am thinking likely won't try this again.  As for the diamond, I know it looks like a heart but it isn't.  No cleft.  Just a fat bottom.  Kind of like me.

Wow Zoey, that IS a cool colored stone!  You're doing great at posting pics too, keep up the great work!
What are you going to do with the stone; how do you plan to set it?

I'm thinking of setting it as a pendant in a heart-shaped bezel with small white diamonds all around.

The whole "is it orangish red or reddish orange" is still driving me crazy though.  My husband has threatened to flush it if I don't stop obsessing.  Perhaps he needs to refocus my attention by buying me another diamond.  Something really really big maybe?  I'll go ask.

Oh wow, I am in love, and I think your line "it has a fat bottom like me" is one of the funniest uttered on CDI. That color is really nice,
I wonder, how would it look in a light yellow halo?

Wow, that is really red! Am I wrong that if the main color is red it would be worth a fortune?

Of course, I would imagine the original seller would have already looked into that.  Without saying who, did you buy it from a diamond dealer, or from a private party?  Did they say anything about it being color-treated?  Anyway, it is beautiful!  Enjoy!!

I got it through a guy who mainly deals in other gems.   According to my IGI report, there is no treatment.  It is natural color.  I have to believe that GIA would likely grade it as an orange because I can't see anyone being silly enough to sell a red (even an orange/red) for the same price as an orange.  Still, if I don't know for sure, I can always dream.

It's a lovely stone, regardless of what a report would say about it. Looking forward to seeing it set. Just one thought though - if it was red and that sent the value upwards, how would that sit with your household insurance policy? Maybe worth checking?

I personally wouldn't bother with the report, but if you're gonna wonder every time you wear it, maybe it's worth it for that alone? I hope you have fun picking out a gorgeous setting and come back with pics for all us  picturewhore s here!

So here are the pics of the diamonds set.  I had asked for a pendant and well.....my jeweler thought he would "surprise me". I now have a ring.  Not really into heart shaped rings but maybe my daughter will be responsible enough one day to wear it (she says crossing her fingers).  It really is an MPD.  It does go from orange to red.  Anyone know how to send a ring off to GIA for a report (btw I don't live in the US so the whole customs process may be an issue)?

Hi zoey - I can't see the pics but I will check back.  Sorry to hear that your jeweller messed this up for you.   Embarrassed  Just so you know, GIA only grades loose stones so you would need to have it unmounted first.

Is there no way the jeweller could modify this for you?  I know we're only seeing one pic but that design looks as if the halo section could be removed and perhaps a diamond studded bale adding.
