I'm really interested to know if anybody knows the answer to this ..........

Most diamond suppliers offer diamonds from D-J but then totally ignore K-Z and then stock "fancy" coloured diamonds.  My question is why?  Certainly diamonds nearer the Z end of the scale can have a beautiful lemon/vanilla colour.  Granted they're neither white nor a strong colour (normally) but why should this mean they're lower in value as well?

Sorry but I'm truly perplexed by this.  DBL stocks the full range so why don't others?  Is it snobbery?

Partly. And partly all the relentless marketing that leads people to believe that a pure white diamond is more beautiful than a warm-coloured one. Plus, they can play off relative scarcity to inflate the prices beyond measure.

It's the same with cut. No doubt a modern Pants-on-Fire, or Arse-and-Arrows or whatever it's called is guaranteed to have sparkle and glitter. I find the same in Old European Cuts, just not to the same degree of repeatability. And rounds are by no means the nicest diamonds, even though they are the most popular ones.

(not that I know the answer, but this is my view)

Hi everybody!

This is a really good question.
The truth is, that many sellers do not have enough faith in the intelligence of the buyers.  I believe that a properly educated buyer will not mind buying an S-T colored diamond.
I believe that it makes a whole lot of sense to educate the buyer in the differences between the lovely faint yellow colors, and a fancy intense yellow or "canary" diamond.

Another important point here is the inaccuracy of non-GIA reports.
Along with this lack of faith in people's intelligence comes the belief that they can fool people with the non-GIA reports.

We see this all the time.  If you're looking for colorless diamond, and you search for a 1.00 G/VS1, you'll find prices ranging from $2000-$7000.  A lot of people would like to believe they can buy that diamond for $2000.  A lot of sellers are ready to lie to them and tell them they can.

So, what we seem to have is an environment where there are buyers who want to get something for nothing, and sellers who want to feed into this desire-regardless of integrity.

Probably, if stores had enough people coming in and asking for this stuff, they might actually try to get it.

OMC brings up a great point. A D color is a lot more money than an M, but it is not necessarily more rare.  We have a very hard time finding these faint yellow diamonds... although we have been successful in it.

Thanks very much for the reply David.  It's interesting to know that even you don't find it easy to source faint yellows!

I was recently browsing a large well established jewellery store in my local town.
In the whole store ( and it`s BIG ) they had just 4 yellow diamond rings, the cheapest was £4,000 ( approx $8,000 ) but none of them were what I`d call intense or canary yellow, they were all faint yellow.
This store stocks hundreds of diamond rings, some of them into 6 figure prices and yet they had just 4 yellow diamond ones.
Maybe 99% of UK buyers simply don`t know enough about coloured diamonds and I must admit I used to be one of them, to me diamonds were always white.
Now I know better ...

Diamonds are like people, put them under a microscope and you`ll always see a flaw but hold them up to the Sun and each and every one is beautiful.

That's OK CS. We appreciate your understanding. This forum is different than others in that all the expenses are paid by rock diamond. And posting links to other jewelry stores or forums just isn't allowed given that it is supported solely by one company.

Read number one and take a look at Sally. <grin>

You won't go to jail for it and we won't really throw you in the pit of vipers because the pit of vipers in on vacation so it's a hollow threat right now. Once they get back they'll be fat and happy for a while. But trip up a month from now--that's another story.

Ooooo no chance of Sally getting me then cos I'm just a jewellery fanatic!   Anyway, since I seem to be spending with David at the mo, it'd financially harm him so I reckon I'm safe from the viper pit for now!!!   Grin
