As far as I know, while a lot of colored diamonds and colored gems are colored by chemical impurities in the stones (like nitrogen, for example) natural green diamonds are created by structural changes to the to the crystals usually caused by some sort of irradiation. Distinguishing between Mother Nature's irradiation and man's artificial irradiation takes a very skilled gemologist.

Thank you. That's what I been reading. I know the pictures are the greatest either. I been Reading that if it's colored by man it's usually distributed evenly and natural colored diamonds will not be evenly distributed. Is this true if you know? Smiley Also in the pictures please take note there is a white spot. This spot is clear and white like a white diamond and is not a Crystal or feather etc. What might cause it to be almost I could say a very nice clear white and green diamond mix, although that wont happen to my knowledge.

Hi Sherrys444-
Welcome!!

Based on the photos- even such as they are- the chances are 99.9999% that it's an irradiated stone.....

Irritated meaning enhanced/colored by man?

May I ask you for a value (guesstimate) on it?
It's 1.76 ct Also does the white spot (not cracked or feathered) decrease it's value? Does that spot turn it to an I1 and how do you grade the color?
Also can I have the green removed or should I leave it? Value speaking I mean....

Thank you in advance for your help....

Hi Sherry!
Irradiated means treated by man- it's a non reversible process that bombards the diamond with radiation changing the color.
Natural green diamonds are the color they are due to million year old natural radiation- which I believe Trinkette referred to- but they are not the same color like man made irradiation, as yours seems to be.

I can't see the spot- nor accurately grade the clarity from a photo anyway....did you just buy this diamond?
If you'd like to post the price I'd be able to make a comment.....

PS- what collage?? ( sorry if I don't remember, but hopefully you'll refresh my memory...)

Hi Sherry!

I've found that if you put your jewelry directly under a strong lightsource, like a desk lamp set on high and set the camera to macro (usually a little flower button/setting) you can take pretty good pics of otherwise hard to photograph diamonds/gems.  That may help us determine what we're looking at.

Did you buy the ring recently?
From a jewelry store or from a person (estate sale/ebay/etc.)?
What kind of documentation did you get with it?  How do you know it's 1.76ct?

Welcome here!

If you are using a digital point and shoot camera, try putting the ring in bright light on top of a book or something.  Get the right height so that you can just rest your camera on the table or counter and still zoom in.  Zoom in a ton and see what you get.  Since my macro lens broke, I found my P&S digital camera does quite well.

I hope all that made sense if not feel free to ask.

I do see the white spot, but obviously couldn't even begin to guess what it is.

Hi Sherry444!

I have a half carat diamond that has received an "Ionic" treatment.  It is a natural diamond that has been coated with a ceramic substance that gives it a gorgeous pink color, the same hue yet a bit more intense than my natural Fancy Brown Pink diamond.  This diamond sparkles like mad.  However, this coating can be scratched and chipped and damaged by acid and a few other things.  A laser had to be used to re-size the ring to avoid damaging the coating.  The culet of this diamond is not coated, and it appears white under magnification.

If I had to guess, based on the white spot, your green diamond is most likely coated, like mine, rather than irradiated.  And the white spot may be where the coating was incomplete or where the coating has been damaged.

Hi everyone  Smiley  hello Thank you for all your help... David I made you a colloge of your diamonds it was a long time ago though I am not sure how else to help you remember but that's OK.
I only paid 250 at a pawn shop, I had been keeping my eye on it for about a year and a half until they dropped the price, however the other day when I went in I was not expecting it to go that low... They started it out at 3500 then it just keep dropping in the price the longer no one bought it...

I will try the light with the camera set on the flower setting thank for your that help as well...
You are all awesum!!!! Wink

Oh I know the carat size cause I had my ring band sized and he (jeweler) messured the stone with his mm gauge, He is good at making silver jewelry and sizing rings he has a gauge and the book but I don't believe he is a full time jeweler because he didn't know what the clarity or color was either.

Sherrys,

Sorry, but I don't know if the coating can be repaired.  I purchased my ring on eBay from POINTSNCARATS.  Try contacting the vendor; he may be able to help you.

It's almost certainly a better choice - particularly if the treatment, whatever it was, started to flake off. Please do get us a better photo! If your camera has a "macro" mode (usually it's a little flower-like symbol), use it. It will enable you to take pictures from a much closer distance while remaining in focus.

you were able to switch the green ring for this for the same price??  you GO GIRL!  it is definitely a much safer bet in terms of value, and if you love it, all the better!

Lovely pick there!  I do think it is a far better choice than what you had before.  I'd love to see more pictures if you have them Smiley
