I'm not sure what GIA would say, but they are all very pretty colors.  I don't believe that "cognac" is an official term for color; more like a comparison of a stone's color to something else to which most people can relate, like "champagne".  Reddish brown seems more technical a term for a modifying color in a brown stone.  I'm no expert, though.

Whether there's a proper name for the color or not, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  With colored diamonds, it seems more important to me that you like the color than what you call it (unless of course it is a highly coveted color which commands an equally high price), IMHO.

Best,

Hi Diamond_Trader, welcome to the forum.  Like the terms, "chocolate," for brown, "champagne," for pale yellow and brown, and "canary," for yellow, "cognac" is not an official color description for diamonds... at least not for the folks at GIA.  Rather, it is "colorful" term coined by clever marketers selling brown diamonds. Put simply, it sounds more exotic, and hopefully, more appealing to a buyer, to call a diamond "fancy cognac" than "fancy deep orange-brown," or similar. To me, "fancy deep orange-brown," for example, tells me much more about a diamond's true color than the subjective "fancy cognac," or more usually the case, just "cognac."

Great answers guys!

I would add that many brown diamonds are dull.
The challenge is finding lively stones with deep color.
