Welcome Pip!

Black Diamonds: Most are irradiated to get the color- although there are natural "black Diamonds"

I'd say they are more of a collectors item.
They look almost like a faceted black onyx.

Welcome Pip!  I agree with David's response on black diamonds.  I personally enjoy wearing them with outfits that I would previously have purchased black rhinestone jewelry, for example.  I have a black diamond circle pendant and matching earrings and I like wearing them with dressy black outfits.  They do look like faceted black onyx or black crystals, but I think sparkle more.  They're so affordable, they really can be purchased and worn as fashion accessories.  I enjoy mine.  Mine are irradiated.

I would wear them for earrings - in fact for my prom a few years ago, I wore fake black diamonds in earrings and on a bracelet- they looked very nice, and I think they really are the most affordable of diamonds, because some don't consider them beautiful. I think if used for the right jewelery, and done right, they can be beautiful!

Don't natural blacks tend to be rather porous?  I didn't know one could get black by irradiation - are they opaque?

I like the look, personally.  Ditto for black spinel, which is nearly as cheap as dirt.

I like black diamonds when they are mixed with white.  But I would like to know if the irradiated ones are dangerous to wear.  I have some natural blackish diamonds in a ring that is from the 1700´s  and they are not the lovely intense black that you see these days but unusual looking.

As the wife of a nuclear engineer who has to hear a lot about this stuff, I have to say that things which are irradiated get a much harder time than they deserve.  As long as you get a stone from the proper channels, it should be perfectly safe.  The same goes for food, blood, or anything else which is irradiated.  Here's the wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irradiation

Note:  I'm not saying I would by an irradiated diamond by any means, just that they aren't dangerous.

I think David had one one time that he compared with charcoal. It wasn't faceted, it was just a chunk.

Hi i recently bought a .33ct round cut single black diamond and noticed quite a bit of relection from the light and was quite pleasantly surprised. I think the size (4mm) is just about right for me (small ears lol) although i was thinking perhaps a bit larger?

I love to wear black and white together, it's about my fav color combo for clothes.  I have looked at some black and white diamond jewelry, and think it looks great.  I would probably only buy one as an occasional fashion ring though.

Madora I love black and white together too, I wear it a lot.  It is very flattering too.  What colour hair have you got?  Just curiosity,  black and white can look wonderful with most colouring I find.

Hi Joia!  My hair is short, and very dark...almost black.  I have a very fair complexion, with blue eyes.  I like the flattering look of wearing black, a slimming look, and I need that!  lol

Hi Madora, it seems that black is very flattering for different complexions, hence the "little black dress" for all occasions.  My father had black hair, blue/green eyes and a white complexion - poor me I took after Mum and got freckles.....
If anyone answers and says they like freckles I´ll   violent1
