This is my first post here, so please be gentle with me.

I have come across a >1 carat oec that I salvaged from a nasty 70's style setting. It has a beautiful yellow color (touch of brown in bright sunlight) that my local jeweler is not qualified enough to comfortably grade. What is the best way to get an accurate grading report on this without spending several hundred dollars?

I'd also love opinions on the stone. I'm going to attempt to post pictures.

This one is the stone just sitting atop a semi-mount I have with white diamond halo.

Man, do I have to do everything around here?

Welcome upgradable and please, NEVER feel intimidated to post here--everyone is super nice so I am confident you will be at ease.

That stone has a beautiful warm color to it. I really like the open culet and crown height of OEC's. I'm sure that David will address where you can get your diamond graded.

Nice to have you here.

HI upgradable!

Thank you so much for posting!
Congratulations on your new stone- it looks really nice!1
The only worthwhile way to get it graded is to send it off the GIA.
No other opinion would really matter anyway.
I believe it's about $150 for a full report.

Thanks! What's the process for that? What's the typically expected turn around time? I appreciate the help.

Thanks Mr. CoyoteMan,

It's unclear from that info if an indivdual not associated with a jeweler can submit a stone. Can I do that on my own, or do I need to take it to my local jeweler to submit? Again, thanks so much for your help!

Hey UpG-  Oldmancoyote is not logged on right now but I'm pretty sure anyone can contact GIA and send a stone to them without the assistance of a jeweler.

Correct-a-mundo djm!

GIA will indeed accept stones from private individuals

Here's my dream of what to do with this stone: a Legacy type cushion halo with the stone itself set in 18k yellow gold.

Upgradable, hi, and welcome.  We're so glad you posted, and, just so you know, we don't bite... I promise! I like your diamond, especially the high crown (or at least it looks to be so from your photo).  I'm a total sucker for older looking stones.

GIA is the way to go. I can't wait to hear what their report says about your diamond, especially regarding the color and florescence... it looks interesting.

And, speaking of interesting, I've not seen a mounting like the one you've shown us... should be a fun project.  Do keep us informed.

Don't know anything about getting the stone graded, but I just wanted to say hello and say how much I love the setting you're thinking about. Gorgeous! I also love the semi mount it's sitting on in your photo. Really flatters the stone.

Let us know how you get on with the grading, I'd be really curious to see what colour it's graded as.

Glad you posted, hope you'll stay around!

Welcome and great pics Smiley

I love both setting ideas that you have posted!

Do you currently have this stone for sale-I thought I saw it on another site?

Diamondluvr, I do have it listed, along with almost all of my other sparklies. We have to reroof our house and we're attempting to raise the funds so as not to have to delve into savings.

Since this still hasn't sold, I may be able to keep it. But either way (for insurance purposes or resale) I need to get a better idea about its color, clarity, and size.
