How is it you take your photos?

I'm guessing some kind of copy stand or something?

what about the lighting?

Thanks!

LOL!  David is very protective of how he takes his pics.  He considers it a trade secret and he doesn't talk about it!

We do have a photography tip thread or two which I am sure will help you out:

thanks DJ,
It's true, I have been protective about the way I take my photos-I am so very proud of them. I haven't seen any that really look like mine.
After all these years(and hundreds of thousands of photos), I've realized that there is something that's in my hands and eyes that makes the picture come out the way it does. Maybe it was all the years working as a diamond assorter.

We have had other people use my equipment and not come out with the same results.
Best of luck taking your photos, newhope!

Thanks David, I certainly didn't mean to be stepping on toes..  Smiley

I'll be trying again before sending the stone off to GIA, maybe I'll get some better pictures.

Newhope, there's some kind of alchemy to it!  Grin

I've looked at hundreds of David's photos over the last couple of years and they are all totally distinctive and always amazing. Until I knew better, I assumed some sort of clever trick- equipment, special light, special lenses maybe?

Not so!

David recently took a photo of a diamond, right in front of me, using my own so-so camera and it looked just like the ones on the website!

I also took several pics at the same time, same camera and they looked like amateur photos of a diamond.  Grin

No tricks, no secrets, I've just come to the conclusion that David sees and captures something different to the rest of us when he looks through a camera, any camera.

It's really rather impressive to watch!

Just another reason why I gotta get my butt to NY!!!! I think the person holds the key to how well anything works.  Sure equipment helps but...

David likes guitars... Say you have 2 competent guitar players (one being David of course), playing on the same guitar... Odds are they'll both produce a different sound.  (Not timbre necessarily, but expression in their playing).  Is one better than the other? Not necessarily.... Know what I mean?

I'm going to reveal the secret right now. David may fire me for it, too.

So here it is. He uses a camera! That's the secret.

That's all I'm really allowed to say. The secret is locked in a safe in Switzerland, closely guarded by a couple of pit bulls and a guy named Lug Nut.

Really, I wasn't trying to get any trade secrets or anything.  angel

See if this is any closer though...
