faintthud omg

Gorgeous, D.  Why was it recut? Do you have before/after photos? Nosy nellie here, yep.

Thanks all!

No "before" photos- we just got the stone today. I would have liked to seen it before.

Judging by the measurement, seeing how they basically shaved a bunch off the bottom- I'd say it wqas done to increase brilliance.

I'd have to agree – it seems reasonable to assume that a recut was necessary to maximize beauty. Lucky little stone! Most likely, the native cut left more sapphire to maximize weight/profit with less-than-desirable concern for overall proportion and brilliance.  dontknow

Here's the 3.62ct Cushion.
AGTA Non heated.
They called the color
"Violet Blue" it's a lovely stone
8.47 x 7.40 x 5.49
This one is $4900

The color is very nice- a lot of life.
In thew two shots below you can see the slight purple tinge referred to as "Violet Blue" on the AGTA report.
As I mentioned, that makes this stone- even a non heated, at least a third less, in terms of cost- as compared to one with no purple.

« Reply #82 on: June 27, 2008, 02:05:50 AM »

I really like the last one too.

I have a question though...what reduces the price of a sapphire more:  having a natural, non-heated sapphire with violet in it -or- a heated sapphire that is a rich pure blue without any violet color?

Oh Lordy!  Not THAT got my attention - very, very pretty!  The blue color on the 4.24ct is stunning too - the color seems deep but full of life.

What a great way to wake up this morning!

Why is it that I always like the most expensive of the lot? (and that's before I noticed the price at the bottom of the "pure blue" stone, in case anyone wonders if it's because I'm a darned snob).

Picking Sapphires is so very difficult for a lot of reasons.
One stone may look very rich -UNTILL- you hold it next to another.
At which point the stronger stone can make the lesser one look really bad.

This is quite unlike diamonds.
If we compare a D color and an M color- we'll see the tint- but the M can still look amazing.
With Blue, the color is so strong that small differences- during comparisons- can make a great stone look pale.

To answer your question- it's the ultimate color which determines the price.
The 3.61 non heated is less than a 3.62 heated oval which has a marginally better color.
When I say marginal, the difference is so subtle,  it's nearly impossible to see- yet the 3.62 is 50% more than the non heated 3.61.

Did  he say 3.62 oval? I think he said 3.62 oval. With marginally better color.

And I KNOW I saw something about an alexandrite.

C'mon David, show us the rest of the goods!!

Talk about  total KNOCKOUT!!
This one is a bit lighter- which I do not mind one bit- it's SOOOOO Lively.
It weighs 4.42carats, and measures 10.1 x 7.4 x 5.8mm
$10,995

This is a really unusual cut for a Sapphire- requiring a lot of waste from the rough- but an AMAZING outcome.....

WOAH!  I admit, I like that one too - LOTS!  And I don't normally like that cut on gemstones but that one is indeed AMAZING.  WOW!

The amazing Radiant cut was part of a six stone package we received about 2 hours ago....
Also contained were these...

This one is an absolutely glorious light blue cushion

The photos give you the idea, but I really feel like Sapphires are generally more "Camera Shy" as compared to diamonds.

A large rock, this one weighs 5.04cts
10.1 x 9.2 mm

I believe this one is unheated, meaning there is an AGTA, or GIA report- but we don;t have that in hand yet...
