 david

I love sapphires and have been looking around a bit.  Several questions come to mind regarding certification (AGTA or GIA) and also heating/no heating.

What can you tell us about the merits of the various certifications and the price difference between heated and non-heated stones?

Thanks - Mikla

Great Question Mikla.
First of all, let's discuss the reports on Sapphires.
Traditionally AGTA was the benchmark.
Since GIA got more involved, I find a lot of dealers using GIA instead.

In terms of the merits of the actual stones...... much tougher question.
Most Sapphires are heated as part of the finishing process- while some are not- that's that what we're talking about here.
I've seen some amazingly beautful sapphires that were heated- and also some un-heated ones that we're...well, so-so.
It's not a hard fast rule that unheated is nicer, or "better"

Clearly, if we're talking the most expensive sapphires, it probably would make a big difference- but I find a lot of gem quality stones that have no report- so we must assume they have been heated.

Dear David -

I'm thinking about a sapphire ring for my next sparkly.  Do you have sources for AGTA or GIA certified blue sapphires (no heat)?

As usual, I do have some pictures to share with some settings that I like . . . the first pic is courtesy of JewelryHog who has this shot posted in the forum photo gallery.

Mikla my favorite is the 4th photo (the last one).  I love the claw prongs and the cut of the stone!

H Mikla,
Absolutely!

We don't currently have any, but we've carried them in the past.
We can certainly get them by request.

Actually the heated ones are really pretty and it is a standard of treatment...If I implied that it was bad in the other thread, I am sorry...I guess what I was trying to say was if it was NOT heat treated then the stone was super pretty and well worth the price...but the stone was NOT discounted like traditional pawn shop fair, so it was not a great deal...it was just kind of normal...if not expensive...I actually like the heated ones.

Not sure.  The center was AGTA certified and was over 7cts if I remember right.  Oh woe is me!   1237387oyy519k20r

Hi All!!

Watch this space- we just got a few AWESOME sapphires- including a couple of AGTA unheated ones that look like Cashmere....amazing color!!!

If CockneySparrow is watching, we also got an Alexandrite that shows tremendous color change!

No early night for me - wild horses couldn't pull me away from this thread.  I really want to see the Alexandrite too.  I've only ever seen one genuine stone in real life and it wasn't the best.  Why can't I work in the office?!  Cori, I am so jealous!
