Hello! I just had a thought- my promise ring, which is sterling silver, needs a different center stone. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet (no diamonds though =(  ) but I was wondering if a jeweler can take out the center stone and replace it, since it's silver. Will it hold up? I'm not sure but I think that sterling silver is even harder than some gold alloys? Not sure. I was thinking about finding a nice sapphire simulant or a diamond simulant so I have something harder than cz, but most simulants are cz anyway. So, I'm still trying to find something I like  but anyway,  if I can't re-set something in the ring, it's of no use to look.

Thanks David!

Hi Snowflake!

I do believe it can be done, but I'm not the best person to answer this.  We've only worked in gold and platinum, never Silver.
The people that we use to polish set and manufacture or jewelry charge enough that Silver would not make economic sense...... maybe that's why it's never come up before.

It's not sizable and it breaks easily. So if you went and bought one of those high-end designer pieces in sterling silver, you can't size it. You have to order your size.

I too have heard this about sizing (or lack of) silver.

Prongs also weaken like mad in sterling.

I actually just had a sterling ring sized, it faired OK, but there is a sizing line(which drives me nuts!)  Undecided  It has a bezel set stone, which made it OK too.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your answers. I guess I'll just get a replacement (it was a cheap ring, but I was hoping to "upgrade" it to keep me satisfied for not being engaged yet.

Thanks guys!
