Actually, I am almost afraid to go down this road, however, I think that the popularity of RBs and Princess cuts these days mainly results from extraordinary marketing which has touted "brilliant" and "light return" as the most prized aspects of a diamond. Fire (dispersion), crystal, extinction and all the other qualities of a faceted diamond simply pale by comparison to B-R-I-L-L-I-A-N-T. These days, bright and brilliant is IN.

Of course, in my mind anyway, what is IN today will be OUT someday (only to be back IN again...). And, there are fabulously well-cut stones and there are crappily cut stones in EVERY facet pattern. There is no definitive "better" or "best" facet pattern overall. Just different.

i got my BA in psychology and i totally agree that marketing is a scary powerful force in culture.

and now on to me looking dumb:
what's the difference between fire and brilliance or light return?
crystal is tricky for me to define but i think i know what it is,
but what's extinction?

SV, I am in the car now. If someone doesn't get to it first, I'll answer when I get home. Basically, brilliance is about light return, fire is dispersion (breaking up of light rays due to crystal structures andu refraction) which the eye sees as rainbow colors, extinction is the absence of return (think kind of visual hole).

The scary thing is that T knows all this stuff off the top of her head.  Me - I gotta look it up every darned time.  Sad

so maybe people have been wondering who bought up R3242 right after she got put back on the site with her new setting...my MIL did!  she realizes that she has been a bit indecisive, but her anniversary date is around the corner and once she saw her baby set the way david envisioned she was SOOLD!

a little lesson learned, if you're ever unsure how you think something should be set, trust david, he knows!

perfection!  she's so happy, she can't wait to get her baby on her finger!

Perfection is exactly right! No wonder she's excited...
What a fantastic choice, and I hope she has a wonderful anniversary.

...and it just proves what so many say 'when you see it, you'll know it!'.  And so your MIL did.  I agree wholeheartedly, SV - when in doubt, let David guide you.  He definitely knows his stuff!

Contratulations to your MIL on both her beautiful new sparkly and her 10th Anniversary.

thanks everyone, she's so excited, calling it her Bling Bling Ring.  Cheesy

it's actually going to be they're 38th anniversary i think.  her second ring upgrade (they were very poor when they first married), and she's turning her current 3 stone ring into earrings and a pendant.  she's super excited!
