Hi all,
So I've been looking for the perfect diamond/ring for my MIL for the longest time now, and i've been waiting patiently for the stars to align... well, when David posted this:
http://rockdiamond.c...re-radiant-gia-r3242
i showed it to my PIL and they said, 'let's do it!'.
So the question now is, what should we do with her?
My MIL is partial to trialliant sides, but she's also developed a fondness for my ring, i.e. pave.  so i'm thinking, split shank pave, maybe halo, maybe no?
What do you think would highlight this beauty the best?

You mentioned a split shank pave halo, so I have to go with this style:

I'm very partial to her, as she is my very own Her Royal Highness.  I love this ring!

Another option - which I can't show you a picture for - is to use the split shank to enclose two trilliant side stones (no pave in this case - one can have too much of a good thing) and the main stone with semi-bezels.

Great minds think alike! I was just about to say what OMC said.

I love both pave split shanks and white trills with a yellow. I would have a really hard time choosing. I think the trills would be easier to wear every day, but the pave would give it real WOW factor! GracefulLion has had both styles with a gorgeous yellow centre stone, so maybe she'll chime in with some compare and contrast info.

If you can find a design that uses both and it's going to suit your MIL's lifestyle, GO FOR IT!

That's one heck of a beautiful diamond you've picked out, too.

Here's a few pictures of various Gregg Ruth styles from which you may get some ideas.  They're pretty intricate, if you like that sort of thing, but they could always be toned down a bit to suit.

Beautiful stone!

How do you think you MIL will wear the ring?  Is this going to be an every day ring?  Can she be tough on her hands?  If I were wearing a pave halo every day, I have a feeling it would be going into David for repairs, regardless of how well it's made.

I love traps with radiants.   Smiley

Oh that is a gorgeous diamond!  Congrats to your MIL!

Mikla's HRH was mine for a while and I traded her up for my now everyday ring, which is a square yellow radiant with trills.  I have handshots of both and will be able to post them in a few hours for comparison.

BTW, when HRH was mine I wore her everyday and she never lost a single stone or seemed at risk to, and I feel the same way about the other two rings with pave I have from DBL.  These rings are soooo well made!  I think it will have more to do with how much bling fatcor she likes.  The split shank makes the center stone seem bigger and looks really nice paired with different diamond bands.  The design with trills, IMHO, looks better on its own or with a simple band and is more understated.  Both gorgeous, but very different feels.

Is there a local jewelry store where she can try on both styles, even with a plain white or different shaped center, just to see what suits her better?  I always feel more confident ordering custom pieces after trying similar styles on first.

Hi again!!  OK, this shot does not do the Eagle justice, and I don't usually wear it with this band, but you get the idea.  The center is a 2.83 Y-Z square radiant, about 7.8mm square:

And here is Mikla's HRH.  I don't remember the exact details, but I am pretty sure it was a 1.58 FLY square radiant, right around 6.5mm square:

OMC i like your idea, i feel like i've seen something like that someplace, i wish i could find the pic 'cause i have trouble visualizing sometimes.
Mikla thanks for the pics, i've never seen/heard of those rings and there all very stunning, a bit too much going on for my MIL though.  i really love pink gold, and i think mixing pink and yellow would be awesome, but i don't think my MIL would go for it.
GL those are amazing shots, and really both are right up my MILS alley, we are going to definitely consider both those options carefully.
We are going to try and go to some local shops to try different styles on.

I like all of these to tell you the truth. But I was going to post the photo that annie did. I love trapezoids with a square radiant.

What a gorgeous ring!  I love the open bridge design and the circle of diamonds above it.  And I love the size of the center diamond - it must be HUGE in person.  I agree, it's a winner!

I love that setting as well- but....
Remember that the top of the ring, in that case, has rounded corners.
It seems to me that we'd want to set this internally flawless in a setting with a top that shows off the remarkable "circle in a square" shape of the stone.
Do you guys think the Daussi in question would look nice with a squared off head?

I think it would, actually. You'd get a nice contrast with the swoopy design under the stone. Maybe the corners of the square could be softened a little, rather than sharp, angular points?

It's a design that has a lot of potential for this stone, but I'd struggle to abandon the trills, if it was my call.  Wink

great point Jen!
I'm not saying it will look wrong- only to consider that aspect.
in fact, here's a ring where we did use a squared off head

yes, that's what I was thinking of - like clipped corners on the halo. I love this one.

David, I love love love the circle in a square look of the diamond, do you really think a rounded frame will detract from that?

The last post with the square head is nice, but the MIL likes a smooth edge, can you do a clipped corner square head with smooth edges?

Question:
if you have a yellow diamond and you're worried it might be a touch on the small side, do you think a white halo will add presence to the ring, or diminish the size of your center?  (yellow pave halos have not been impressive.)
would a bezel set add size and color? or prongs?
would a solitaire setting with abbreviated split shanks emphasize the size of your stone, or would setting it all by itself make it look smaller and lonely?
