David,

I've been admiring this (unfortunately, sold) ring and was curious, what type of cushion is the center stone? (Item #R1870)

Thanks!

That is a really awesome ring rialaine!  So pretty.  Is your question asking who cut the stone, like is it a Daussi?

Hi everyone
that stone was cut in Russia
it was not a Daussi- in fact it was kind of opposite of a Daussi
I say that because Daussi stones are more glittery- you can look inside.
This one was more of a crushed ice look- incredible sparkle
GIA uses two classifications for cushions:
Cushion Brilliant, and Cushion Modified Brilliant.
This one was the second type

R3265 has some of the same qualities - brilliant sparkly crushed ice.

David,

Could you please post sketches of the two cuts so we can understand the difference?

 Thanx

Great Question guys!
I never actually took note of the specific differences, with regards to how GIA classifies them till recently- I still use visual inspection as the first and last word when selecting.
Both  Cushion Modified Brilliant and Cushion Brilliant can be gorgeous stones. Many Fancy Colors are the modified variety.
The differences have to do with facet pattern.
Unfortunately we don't have the GIA report for the stone Ruby pointed out- the cutter is so large, they actually throw away the I1 reports in some cases.
We will order a duplicate- but checking on the GIA site shows that one is a Cushion Modified Brilliant. Here's a GIA plot for a Cushion Modified Brilliant.

The top is the same- but the bottom main facets are different between the Cushion Modified and Cushion Brilliant

Here's R2894- a Cushion Brilliant

The GIA report

Notice that the bottom is divided into four main groups

In the chart on the post above this,  the one on the left is an 8 Main Cushion

Thanks David for that!  I have to say it wasn't until reading here that I really 'grasped' what people were talking about when they said "Four Main" or "Eight Main"  It really never clicked until I saw the pictures to go with.

Modern cushions are really starting to grow on me...  my next itch is for a pendant and I wonder if a modern cushion would be more "me" than just another RB.

You're welcome clgwli!
Truth is, the way we buy diamonds, it's generally not necessary for me to distinguish things according to those parameters.
IOW- you look at it and can easily see if you love it or not.

For comparison here's an 8 Main Cushion Brilliant

I think I prefer the 8-main.  I'm really coming to like the culet and more of a Daussi-type feel to a cushion.  The sparkle factor, I guess.  That , or I've been spending too much time visiting R2823 http://rockdiamond.c...s-it-purple-platinum   Evil

I'm a huge fan of the Daussi cushions, I love the slightly unusual, antique-ish feel to the cut. 8 main appeals to me a lot.

Have to say though, the brilliant cushions are just beautiful too. I think they look very different and I'd be hard pushed to choose between them. I see them as different cuts and I'd like one of each (naturally).  Wink

IOW=In Other Words

I look for diamonds much like you do David.  If my eye likes, I want.  I'm really  not so hung up on namings of cuts.

Well Daussi cuts are a whole other ball game, but it's more of a style to me (like saying antique cushion cut) than it is a label since I know they vary so much.

I can't decide what I like most of these.  I really like an antique look with the open culet.  But I also am starting to appreciate the modern cushions as well.  My eyes are looking for a pendant so right now I think I am looking for more spakles  Grin

It's tough, isn't it? I think they're so different they shouldn't both be called cushions! I think you'd need one of each, clgwli. How about a modern cushion pendant and a pair of 8 main / open cullet earrings?

Actually at one point I was thinking like that.

Though I've been dying for asscher cut diamonds to have somewhere.  If we don't do asscher side stones on my ring in the future, I'll have to do earrings I think.

My pendant I am unsure of... I also have 1 loose marquise and a transitional cut I can use.  The latter is set in a ring, but I wouldn't mind removing it and putting in a gemstone in the setting.  It's somewhere around 1/3 carat give or take (I've gotten estimates up to a half a carat since it is older so I am not sure anymore).

I'll be working part time come August and I will have more play money for gems and Coach  Grin

I wish I had some photoshop skills. I have a lovely mental image of a necklace where there's just a simple chain, then a little row of different shape bezelled diamonds hanging from it as the pendant part, with your marquise at the bottom.

I think David had something like that in the office recently, but it was a bracelet (of course sans pendant, but the marquise could always be organised as the "centrepiece")

Well the marquise isn't too large either.  I can't remember the measurements exactly but it was somewhere around 3x5.  I ought look around to see if I can find the pendant.

I wish I could picture what you are though, because I bet it could be lovely!

The best I can do is a very lame little pencil sketch, photographed and posted (ideally under someone else's name haha) Grin.

I'll see if I can do that tomorrow, if you like.
