Personally I would remove the milgrain from the bottom and keep it on the top next to the melee.  I also understand about the stones around the halo region.  My son is awake and snuggling next to me so I can't do another mock up but I can picture it and I think it would be great!

Thank you for your input, Squig and Shiba.

Shiba, I'm really sorry about writing essays. Thanks for reading them. Smiley I'll ktry to keep it short from now on.

Squig, please don't do another PS mockup. I really don't want to put you out, and you've made it so clear already, that all I need to tweak are the tiny details that don't need a mockup, so thank you very much for the time you've already put into my ring. It means a lot to me. Smiley

I'm not usually a milgrain person either, but it just seems to be such a part of the 'structure' of this ring, that I can't really think of it not being there.

You don't think maybe something of the elegance in the side view (mockup view: what do you call that?) would be lost if it was totally smooth? I love the way the 'bridge' under the head section narrows to a point, and I think I would be sad to see it go, but without milgrain, it would, I think. (So sorry for mangling the terminology. Maybe OMC could set me straight?)

Hi, Atlantys!
Welcome back to the forum.  I feel the need to chime in.  First, congrats on making your engagement official.  I'm a new fan of milgraining:  my ER has it (see thread under "show off your jewels"), and it also has diamonds on three sides.  The roundness of the milgraining creates a shine and contrast, and having the extra diamonds on the sides of the shank helps, as it makes the ring GLOW in the right lighting conditions, both of which draw the eye to the ring.  I was picturing your ring with the fancy diamond in it in the three-sided setting and think it would look exquisite that way.  While the decision is for you and your intended, any DBL ring will look fabulous, but I felt the need to put in My2cents.

Thank you for the welcome and your feedback. Smiley I'll go look at your ER thread now.

About the diamonds on 3 sides, that's definitely out. We decided on a budget that we were comfortable with, and we're being quite strict about sticking to it (it's really hard to be practical about an engagement ring because it's such an emotional purchase, but there are more practical things that we need to concentrate on at the moment). This setting is exquisite, there's no doubt about it, but it is WAY out of our budget, and I think DBL is being very patient with us while we try to work on keeping the essence and spirit of the design, and lower the cost.

Granted my ring I wear is all smooth edged, I do have the same kind of "bridge" look as this one does.  Not as fancy, but even smooth edged it is still there and very noticable.

So honestly I waffle on yours.  I do believe either way it will look stunning.  One thing to think about is if you are wearing a wedding ring next to it or not.  If you are, I wouldn't worry too much about having it or not since it will be "coveredd" by the wedding ring.

I truly don't think you can go wrong either way.

I agree with Shiba and clgwli. Plain on the side - millegrain on top if you like it.

Plus, millegrain along the shank is not really a traditional use (millegrain was invented to "hide" the prongs on small diamonds and provide additional scintillation - not something that it is going to achieve in that position). Of course, traditions are there to be abandoned at some point - else we would all live in caves and eat semi-raw deer on the bone - but nevertheless...

haha, no worries!  Normally I tend to be quite long winded, but my brain has been rather overworked and is in need of a holiday.  Write all you need, as it does give us a better idea of direction when offering suggestions.  Kiss

I don't think you would loose it at all.  To me, the milgrain actually softens the look of the edges and the design.  I think for definition, you would want to leave the milgrain off.  I think you mean profile view- to see it from the side?
