david You have listed some very beautiful fancy shaped diamonds, especially pears and ovals lately... but, let's not forget your astounding emerald and Asscher cuts! And theses gorgeous diamonds spread all up and down the price spectrum.  Do most of your fancy shapes come from the same sources, or is it just great pickin' on your part? Like, is there a "pear guy" out there? A "go-to guy" for Asschers? The shape of newbie R2575 is exquisite.  And, then, of course,  oval R2463 – simply drop-dead spectacular... I mean what more could one ask for?

That's a great question T!

There's a few cutters that have been supplying us since the very beginning, 10 years ago.
Along the way we've picked up some additional amazing sources

But one of my favorite cutters is a major-league producer.  In this business, "major league" means  hundreds of millions of dollars.
To be able to buy so much means he needs to buy all types of rough.  Some of it is just not shaped all that well and comes out to be badly shaped fancy cut diamonds.
For example, I might look through 15 pear-shaped diamonds, to pick only two or three that I really love.

One flip of the coin nets and awkward shape, yet another produces a one-of-a-kind diamond that's out of this world.

However, it's a privilege to be able to look through so many diamonds.

Although some of the cutters that we have dealt with are better at some cuts than others, we have been graced to know some genius cutters that seem to do every single cut right.

If it's the company I'm thinking about, I sat in his office one day. You guys would have been riveted by the conversation and the diamonds. They were beautifully cut. All of them. I don't know how David could choose.

No. you are correct.  BUT, I'll never get there. It will be someone else's beautiful sparkly. I keep spending on house "emergencies." Then, to make myself feel better, I go out and purchase a "smaller" sparkly.  I'll never get there at this rate!  But, as I've written many times, I know David can find another GORGEOUS something-special when it is time.

A few more thoughts on this:

Diamond cutting is a totally different business compared to buying and selling of polished diamonds.
For one thing, it's far more speculative. Buy a polished diamond, and it's possible to know exactly what you're getting.
When cutters buy rough, they basically have to buy it blind- with results that can range from tremendous profit, to total loss.
A cutter might buy a large piece of rough only to have it shatter on the wheel.
In many cases, the seller of the rough forces the buyer to "buy blind"- so the cutter might think he's getting a D/VS1- which finishes as an F/VS2- that difference could mean he's loosing his shirt on that piece.
To really get an idea of what the inside of the diamond looks like, cutters polish a small "window" in the rough diamond's skin- this allows the buyer to get a much better idea of the color, and clarity- but not to an exact degree.
Even if there's a window, it's generally not possible to know exactly what you'll get- but in many cases, even that is not allowed.

It's also not really possible to buy rough one piece at a time- unless we're talking very large ones- and even then.....
Generally rough is sold in large lots.
Since there is so much speculation, this rough needs to paid for, in full, at the time of purchase.
Polished diamonds are often traded at the wholesale level, on credit.

Put this all together and it makes being a diamond cutter incredibly difficult.

Back to the question: We have been very lucky to have found many cutters that seem to be able to be able to make all the correct choices when cutting- thereby allowing the production to be consistent, and beautiful across the board.

One guy, who buys rough all over the world and polishes many stones worth more than $500,000, is such a cutter.
EVERY stone I look at there seems to be beautifully cut.
What a smart guy.......
